Reactive oxygen species attenuation improves the quality of vitrified-warmed bovine embryos.

Departamento de Clínica e Cirurgia Veterinárias, Escola de Veterinária, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brasil.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of modulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vitrified bovine in vitro produced (IVP) embryos. In experiment I we compared ROS production in fresh and vitrified-warmed blastocysts. In experiment II we evaluated the effects of antioxidant supplementation (100 μM of 2-mercaptoethanol; BME; 0 h to 2 h during warming) on ROS levels in vitrified-warmed blastocysts, and in experiment III we compared the development of fresh and vitrified-warmed blastocysts in the presence (BME) or absence (Control) of antioxidant (100 μM BME; 0 h to 48 h during warming).

Although human metapneumovirus(hMPV) infection can induce severe symptoms in older adults or immunocompromised patients, it usually causes mild symptoms in young immunocompetent adults. The prevalence of hMPV infectious disease is highest during the late winter and early summer. We report a hypoxemic case of hMPV infection in a young immunocompetent man that occurred in the first autumn after the reclassification of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) from Class 2 to Class 5.

The process of regenerating bone injuries in diabetic presents significant challenges because lysine oxidase (LOX), a key catalytic enzyme for collagen cross-linking, is inhibited in hyperglycemia. The supplementation of LOX is constrained by inadequate sources and diminished enzymatic activity, necessitating the development of effective alternatives for enhancing bone regeneration in diabetes. Herein, we reported a lysyl oxidase nanozyme (LON), derived from the catalytic domain of LOX.

Antioxidant capacity and athletic condition of endurance horses undergoing nutraceutical supplementation.

J Equine Vet Sci

Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences, University of Milan, Via dell'Università 6, 26900 Lodi, Italy.

Endurance is an equestrian discipline that primarily relies on aerobic metabolism. Intense aerobic exercise produces reactive oxygen species due to an imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant substances, known as oxidative stress, which may reduce athletic performance. This study evaluated the effects of a feed supplement containing natural antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids on the blood antioxidant activity and the athletic condition of endurance horses undergoing an exercise test.

Polylactic acid microplastics before and after aging induced neurotoxicity in zebrafish by disrupting the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

January 2025

National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Municipal Sewage Resource Utilization Technology, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Suzhou University of Science and Technology, Suzhou 215009, China. Electronic address:

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable alternative to traditional plastics due to its excellent biocompatibility. However, PLA is challenging to fully degrade and can easily become microplastics (MPs) in surface water, a process accompanied by aging. This study found that aged PLA (APLA) MPs exhibited increased surface roughness, decreased surface potential, and more oxygen-containing functional groups compared to PLA.
