To enhance the processing suitability of blended flours, this study used 4 kGy E-beam irradiated (EBI) sorghum flour in different ratios blended with wheat flour and further verified the improvement mechanism of the processed products under the optimal ratios. The results suggested that the EBI can mitigate the deterioration of the blend flour farinograph properties while enhancing the gas release during dough fermentation. Under the same addition ratio, the irradiated blend flours showed higher expansion height, gas release, cavitation time, and gas retention coefficient than the control flours. Also, irradiated blend flours retained a gluten network at a higher addition rate (20 %). Moreover, the irradiated blend flours were optimized at 10 % as its pasting and thermal properties were improved. Notably, this ameliorating effect promotes a decrease in hardness and chewiness and an increase in cohesion of the bread cores, presenting better textural attributes and delaying the aging rate during storage. The findings are instructive for applying EBI technology in the manufacture and quality improvement of mixed grain breads and open a new research avenue for processing sorghum staple foods.

With a prevalence of over 90% in people over 50, intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a major health concern. This weakening of the intervertebral discs can lead to herniation, where the nucleus pulpus (NP) leaks through the surrounding Annulus Fibrosus (AF). Considering the limited self-healing capacity of AF tissue, an implant is needed to restore its architecture and function.

Waste polyethylene (WPE) and virgin polyethylene (VPE) (50:50) thermoplastic have been melt-mixed with biochar (BC) made from orange peels at ratios of 5, 10, and 15(Phr) to evaluate how the filler content affected the mechanical, thermal, optical, electrical conductivity, and electromagnetic interference (EMI). γ-rays was applied to the prepared specimens to assess how radiation affected the created biocomposites. From the obtained results, the combination of BC with γ-rays, at doses of up to 100 kGy, with thermoplastic resulted in an enhanced mechanical property, particularly for composites containing 15 Phr of BC added because of its unique structure and excellent dispersion.

A practical and efficient reaction for C-selenylation of 1,4-naphthoquinones has been explored. This coupling reaction of two redox structural motifs, such as 2-bromo-1,4-naphthoquinone with diaryldiselenide/ebselen has been achieved by using sodium borohydride reducing agent at room temperature. Using this approach, several 2-selenylated-1,4-naphthoquinones were obtained in moderate to good yields and thoroughly characterized by multinuclear (H, C, and Se) NMR, cyclic voltammetry, and mass spectrometry.

In this paper, two new organic manganese halides (pe-ted)MnX (pe-ted = ethylphenyltriethylenediamine cation, X = Cl, Br) are synthesized, exhibiting green luminescence with near-unity photoluminescence quantum efficiency. (pe-ted)MnBr shows good linear response to X-ray dose rate, with a high light yield of ≈62 000 photons MeV and low detection limit of 1.376 µGy s.

This study addresses the extension of the service life of carbon-fiber reinforced epoxies by inducing thermal healing of microcracks through the use of a vitrimer as a polymeric matrix. Our aim was to explore the feasibility of using a blend of selected carboxylic acids (citric, glutaric, and sebacic acids) and commercial monomers to design a matrix specifically developed for technological implementation in composites with the ability of intrinsic repair of microcracks under moderate (even remote) heating treatments. The selection of the formulation (the acid blend, catalysts, and monomers) was the result of an exhaustive prescreening analysis of processing requisites and final properties.
