Consciousness and complexity: a consilience of evidence.

Neurosci Conscious

Published: August 2021

Over the last years, a surge of empirical studies converged on complexity-related measures as reliable markers of consciousness across many different conditions, such as sleep, anesthesia, hallucinatory states, coma, and related disorders. Most of these measures were independently proposed by researchers endorsing disparate frameworks and employing different methods and techniques. Since this body of evidence has not been systematically reviewed and coherently organized so far, this positive trend has remained somewhat below the radar. The aim of this paper is to make this consilience of evidence in the science of consciousness explicit. We start with a systematic assessment of the growing literature on complexity-related measures and identify their common denominator, tracing it back to core theoretical principles and predictions put forward more than 20 years ago. In doing this, we highlight a consistent trajectory spanning two decades of consciousness research and provide a provisional taxonomy of the present literature. Finally, we consider all of the above as a positive ground to approach new questions and devise future experiments that may help consolidate and further develop a promising field where empirical research on consciousness appears to have, so far, naturally converged.

The clinical relevance of having more than one estrogen in combined hormonal contraception to address the needs of women.

Unlabelled: This chapter examines the potential of natural estrogens, particularly estradiol and estetrol, in combined hormonal contraceptive pills as alternatives to the widely used synthetic ethinyl estradiol. Current evidence highlights the promise of these natural estrogens in providing effective contraception with improved safety profiles and maintained tolerability.

What We Know: Estradiol and estetrol exhibit favorable safety and efficacy profiles compared to ethinyl estradiol.

Type 2 airway inflammation (T2AI), driven by type 2 innate lymphoid and CD4 T helper 2 cells, leads to various diseases and conditions, such as chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. Emerging evidence suggests the involvement of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in these diseases. In this review, we describe the immunological T2AI pathogenic mechanisms, outline EV characteristics, and highlight their applications in the diagnosis and treatment of T2AI.

Importance: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) frequently cause substantial pain and reduced mobility, posing a major health problem. Despite the critical need for effective pain management to restore functionality and improve patient outcomes, the value of various conservative treatments for acute VCF has not been systematically investigated.

Objective: To assess and compare different conservative treatment options in managing acute pain related to VCF.

Drug Repurposing using consilience of Knowledge Graph Completion methods.

While link prediction methods in knowledge graphs have been increasingly utilized to locate potential associations between compounds and diseases, they suffer from lack of sufficient evidence to explain why a drug and a disease may be indicated. This is especially true for knowledge graph embedding (KGE) based methods where a drug-disease indication is linked only by information gleaned from a vector representation. Complementary pathwalking algorithms can increase the confidence of drug repurposing candidates by traversing a knowledge graph.

Different roads, same destination: The shared future of plant ecophysiology and ecohydrology.

Plant Cell Environ

September 2024

Civil, Environmental, and Mining Engineering, University of Western Australia, Perth, Western Australia, Australia.

Terrestrial water fluxes are substantially mediated by vegetation, while the distribution, growth, health, and mortality of plants are strongly influenced by the availability of water. These interactions, playing out across multiple spatial and temporal scales, link the disciplines of plant ecophysiology and ecohydrology. Despite this connection, the disciplines have provided complementary, but largely independent, perspectives on the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum since their crystallization as modern scientific disciplines in the late 20th century.
