Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) as a zero-energy-consumption cooling technique offers rich opportunities in reducing global energy consumption and mitigating CO emissions. Developing high-performance PDRC coolers with practical applicability based on sustainable materials is of great significance, but remains a big challenge. Herein, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and esterified cellulose (EC) extracted from sawdust were used as raw materials to construct foams by using a dual-crosslinking assisted-unidirectional freeze-drying strategy followed by hydrophobic surface modification. The resultant PVA/EC (PEC) foams with ideal hierarchical macropore structure displayed various excellent features, such as low thermal conductivity (26.2 mW·m·K), high solar reflectance (95 %) and infrared emissivity (0.97), superhydrophobicity as well as high mechanical properties. The features allowed the PEC foams to be used as radiative coolers with excellent PDRC performance and thermal insulating materials. A maximum sub-ambient temperature drops of 10.2 °C could be achieved for optimal PEC foams. Building simulations indicated that PEC foams could save 55.8 % of the energy consumption for Xi'an. Our work would give inspiration for designing various types of PDRC coolers, including but certainly not limited to foams-based radiative coolers.

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) have emerged as an attractive category of materials for their water processability and some similarities to natural biopolymers. Herein, we employ the intrinsic hydroplasticity of PEC materials to enable the generation of porous structures with the aid of gas foaming. Such foamable materials are fabricated by simply mixing polycation, polyanion, and a UV-initiated chemical foaming agent in an aqueous solution, followed by molding into thin films.

Graded foam-filled channels are a very promising solution for improving the thermal performance of heat sinks because of their customized structures that leave large amounts of room for heat transfer enhancement. Accordingly, this paper proposes a comprehensive optimization framework to address the design of such components, which are subjected to a uniform heat flux boundary condition. The graded foam is achieved by parameterizing the spatial distributions of porosity and/or Pores Per Inch (PPI).

Carbon dioxide (CO) is becoming more attractive as a renewable feedstock for chemical synthesis. In this study, CO was incorporated into poly(ether carbonate) (PEC) polyols by using a double-metal-cyanide catalyst. By adjusting the CO pressure, the content of propylene carbonate units in the PEC polyols was controlled, indicating successful and semiquantitative incorporation of CO into the PEC polyols.

This work reports the liposome-mediated in situ formation of the AgI/Ag/BiOI Z-scheme heterojunction on foamed nickel electrode for signal-on cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis. Specifically, in a proof-of-concept study, Ag nanoparticle-encapsulated liposomes were initially confined via the sandwich immunobinding and then processed to release numerous Ag ions, which were then directed to react with the BiOI/Ni electrode, resulting in the in situ generation of a AgI/Ag/BiOI Z-scheme heterojunction on the electrode. The enhanced cathodic signal could be correlated to the target concentration, which thus underlays a novel signal-on cathodic liposomal PEC bioanalysis strategy.
