We investigate diffusion in polydisperse granular media. We derive the mean-squared displacement of granular particles in a polydisperse granular gas in a homogeneous cooling state, containing an arbitrary amount of species of different sizes and masses. We investigate both models of constant and time-dependent restitution coefficients and obtain a universal law for the size dependence of the mean-squared displacement for steep size distributions.

Article Synopsis
  • Geophysical mass flows in mountain regions pose risks to health and safety, but the dynamics of granular flow, especially involving different grain types, remain poorly understood.
  • This study examined how small spherical grains, such as glass beads, affect the movement of larger stones in mixed granular flows made up of materials like quartz gravel and angular stone.
  • Findings showed that while small spherical grains generally decrease certain deposition distances for larger stones, they also increase the likelihood of extreme motion, suggesting a complex interaction that enhances mobility in granular mixtures.

Microstructural characterization of DEM-based random packings of monodisperse and polydisperse non-convex particles.

Understanding of hard particles in morphologies and sizes on microstructures of particle random packings is of significance to evaluate physical and mechanical properties of many discrete media, such as granular materials, colloids, porous ceramics, active cells, and concrete. The majority of previous lines of research mainly dedicated microstructure analysis of convex particles, such as spheres, ellipsoids, spherocylinders, cylinders, and convex-polyhedra, whereas little is known about non-convex particles that are more close to practical discrete objects in nature. In this study, the non-convex morphology of a three-dimensional particle is devised by using a mathematical-controllable parameterized method, which contains two construction modes, namely, the uniformly distributed contraction centers and the randomly distributed contraction centers.

In nonequilibrium statistical physics, quantifying the nearest (and higher-order) neighbors and free volumes of particles in many-body systems is crucial to elucidating the origin of macroscopic collective phenomena, such as glass/granular jamming transitions and various aspects of the behavior of active matter. However, conventional techniques (based on a fixed-distance cutoff or the Voronoi construction) have mainly been applied to equilibrated, homogeneous, and monodisperse particle systems. In this paper, we implement simple and efficient methods for local structure analysis in nonequilibrium, inhomogeneous, and polydisperse hard disk systems.

From shear bands to earthquakes in a model granular material with contact aging.

We perform molecular dynamics simulations of homogeneous athermal systems of poly-disperse soft discs under shear. For purely repulsive interactions between particles, and under a confining external pressure, a monotonous flow curve (strain rate stress) starting at a critical yield stress is obtained, with deformation distributing uniformly in the system, on average. Then we add a short range attractive contribution to the interaction potential that increases its intensity as particles remain in contact for a progressively longer time, mimicking an aging effect in the system.
