Groundwater is valued as a source of potable water, although it is vulnerable to environmental pollution. The aim of this study was to track enteric pathogen contamination from on-site sanitation (OSS) facilities to 70 household boreholes used by four villages of the Vhembe District Municipality. Two objectives were pursued: to measure the lateral distance between the borehole and the sanitation facilities in household yards, and to track the enteric pathogens. The borehole abstraction point and OSS system distance were determined using a steel measuring tape. Real-time PCR was used to track , typhimurium, , and enterotoxigenic (ETEC) from Wastewater (WW) from domestic septic tank and sludge from pit latrines to boreholes. was used as an indicator of faecal contamination. Results showed that 25% of households kept a distance of ≥50 m between the OSS facilities and the boreholes. In total, 87.5% of household boreholes in the rainy season and 72.5% in the dry season were contaminated with and pathogenic bacteria: , , and ETEC. The concentrations of the pathogens ranged from 2.03 to 2.12 LogEGC/100 mL. A very weak (r = -0.093) to moderate (r = -0.541) association was found between pathogens in groundwater and on-site sanitation systems (WW from septic tank and sludge from pit latrine). This suggests that the pathogens were not present in the sanitation compartment when they were found in the groundwater and vice versa. Moreover, a very weak (r = 0.007) to moderate (r = 0.525) association was found between the detected contaminants in groundwater and the lateral distance between the OSS facilities and the boreholes. The pathogens detected in all samples showed consistent concentrations, suggesting potential contamination from OSS systems' waste, possibly in groundwater, indicating potential contamination. The siting of OSS facilities at the yards in this study appeared to have a slight influence on the contaminants detected in groundwater. This study calls for an education program to be implemented by the Water and Sanitation Services Authorities to prevent contamination of groundwater and the risk of waterborne diseases.

Manufacturing and testing of pharmaceutical products frequently occur in multiple facilities within a company's network. It is of interest to demonstrate equivalence among the alternative testing/manufacturing facilities to ensure product consistency and quality regardless of the facility where it was manufactured/tested. In the Frequentist framework, equivalence testing is well established when comparing two labs or manufacturing facilities; however, when considering more than two labs or production sites, the Frequentist approach may not always offer appropriate or interpretable estimates for demonstrating equivalence among all of them simultaneously.

Purpose: Given the current scenario of increased smartphone use in youth, this study aims to evaluate the proportion of ocular symptoms and binocular dysfunction and their association with smartphone use in adolescents through a hospital-based cross-sectional study.

Methods: The participants were asked to fill out questionnaires related to smartphone use and symptoms of eyestrain experienced (Balik et al. and Kucer).

Treating Benign Ovarian Lesions in the Pediatric Population: A Single Institution's Retrospective Investigation of Laparoscopy Versus Open Repair.

October 2024

Department of Surgery, Section of Pediatric Surgery, Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

Benign ovarian lesions in the pediatric population have variable risk of recurrence or development of metachronous lesions, leading to variations in operative approach. Our study compares outcomes with differing surgical approaches to better elucidate risk of recurrent or metachronous lesions, time to development of these lesions, and hospital length of stay to determine if one operative approach has superior outcomes. We retrospectively examined data from Indiana University Health facilities from 2002 to 2020.

Emotional Exhaustion in Healthcare Workers: Moving Beyond Coping Skills to Improve Organizational Conditions.

J Occup Environ Med

April 2024

From the Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace, Lowell, Massachusetts (CPH-NEW) (S.S., R.G., L.P.); Department of Public Health, Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts (S.S.); Department of Biomedical Engineering, Francis College of Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts (R.G.); Solomont School of Nursing, Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts (Y.Z.); and Department of Biomedical Engineering, Francis College of Engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Lowell, Massachusetts (L.P.).

Objective: Emotional exhaustion (EE)-the first stage of burnout-is related to preventable work environment exposures. We examined the understudied impact of organizational support for safety (OSS) and safety hazards (SH) on EE in a mixed licensed and unlicensed population of healthcare workers (HCWs).

Methods: A work environment exposures survey was conducted in five US public healthcare facilities in 2018-2019.
