This review provides a comprehensive overview of the chemistries and workflows of the sequencing methods that have been or are currently commercially available, providing a very brief historical introduction to each method. The main optical genome mapping approaches are introduced in the same manner, although only a subset of these are or have ever been commercially available. The review comes with a deck of slides containing all of the figures for ease of access and consultation.

Michael Somogyi (Somogyi Mihály, 1883-1971) was a Hungarian biochemist who developed his scientific career in Europe and, primarily, the United States. He gave the name to the eponymous Somogyi effect or Somogyi hypothesis (in short, rebound hyperglycemia after insulin-induced hypoglycemia, particularly nocturnal), which was an axiom in the treatment of diabetes for decades. Although it is currently debated whether the Somogyi hypothesis is a real or relevant phenomenon in patients with diabetes, Somogyi's other significant career achievements are often overlooked.

Altermagnetism was very recently identified as a new type of magnetic phase beyond the conventional dichotomy of ferromagnetism (FM) and antiferromagnetism (AFM). Its globally compensated magnetization and directional spin polarization promise new properties such as spin-polarized conductivity, spin-transfer torque, anomalous Hall effect, tunneling, and giant magnetoresistance that are highly useful for the next-generation memory devices, magnetic detectors, and energy conversion. Though this area has been historically led by the thin-film community, the identification of altermagnetism ultimately relies on precise magnetic structure determination, which can be most efficiently done in bulk materials.

The development of defect-free flint glass for use in telescopes and navigational instruments was a key technological challenge facing European chemists, natural philosophers, and artisans that emerged in the 1750s. In 1805, Pierre-Louis Guinand, a Swiss artisan, invented a fireclay stirrer used to stir molten flint glass to create a homogenous mixture relatively free of defects. In this paper, I show it was not Guinand, but French chemist Antoine Baumé, who first came up with the idea of using a fireclay stirrer.

Kenneth (Ken) Sauer was a mainstay of research in photosynthesis at the University of California, Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) for more than 50 years. Ken will be remembered by his colleagues, and other workers in the field of photosynthesis as well, for his pioneering work that introduced the physical techniques whose application have enriched our understanding of the basic reactions of oxygenic photosynthesis. His laboratory was a training ground for many students and postdocs who went on to success in the field of photosynthesis and many others.
