This study evaluates the response of ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) assemblage to forest management practices by integrating species composition, body traits, wing morphology and developmental instability. Traditional approaches that rely on averaged identity-based descriptors often overlook phenotypic plasticity and functional trait variability, potentially masking species-specific responses to environmental changes. To address this, we applied a three-layered analytical approach to address this gap, utilising ground beetle occurrence and morphological trait data from Podyjí National Park, Czech Republic.

The minimal sampling effort required to report the microbiome composition of insect surveyed in natural environment is often based on empirical or logistical constraints. This question was addressed with the white pine cone beetle, (Schwarz), a devastating insect pest of seed orchards. It attacks and stop the growth of the cones within which it will spend its life, on the ground.

Electronic address:

Arthropods play a critical role in the functioning of grassland ecosystems, and are largely affected by herbivore grazing. However, the mechanisms of grazing affecting arthropod community, especially through modulating plant traits and soil properties, are still unclear. We investigated the variation in arthropod community variables including family richness, activity-density, biomass, and body size in typical steppe grasslands subject to grazing at four intensity levels (nil, light, moderate and heavy) in central Inner Mongolia (China), and analyzed the relationships of these variations with grazing-induced changes in plant traits, plant community attributes and soil properties.

Deep conservation complemented by novelty and innovation in the insect eye ground plan.

A spectacular diversity of forms and features allow species to thrive in different environments, yet some structures remain relatively unchanged. Insect compound eyes are easily recognizable despite dramatic differences in visual abilities across species. It is unknown whether distant insect species use similar or different mechanisms to pattern their eyes or what types of genetic changes produce diversity of form and function.

Microplastics inhibit the decomposition of soil organic matter by adult darkling beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

Department of Biology, and the Program in Environmental Science, Whittier College, Whittier, CA, USA.

Microplastics (MPs) are a growing problem worldwide. Soils are long-term storage sinks of MPs because of the many pathways they enter the soil and their long degradation period. Knowing how MPs influence soil organisms, the effects of organisms on the fate of MPs, and what this means for soil additions, losses, transformations, and translocations is paramount.
