Objective: Severe radiation-induced oral mucositis (sRIOM) can seriously affect patients' quality of life and treatment compliance. This study was to investigate the utility of the systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in predicting sRIOM in patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LANPC).

Methods: 295 patients with LANPC were retrospectively screened. The pre-radiotherapy SII and PNI were calculated based on peripheral blood samples. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the cut-off value. Logistic regression was used for univariate and multivariate analyses. Patients were classified into three groups based on the SII-PNI score: score of 2, high SII (> cut-off value) and low PNI (≤ cut-off value); score of 1, either high SII or low PNI; score of 0, neither high SII nor low PNI.

Results: The SII-PNI demonstrated significant predictive ability for sRIOM occurrence, as evidenced by an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.738. The incidence rates of sRIOM with SII-PNI score of 2, 1, and 0 were 73.86%, 44.35%, and 18.07%, respectively. Multivariate analysis confirmed that the SII-PNI score was an independent risk factor for sRIOM.

Conclusion: The SII-PNI score is a reliable and convenient indicator for predicting sRIOM in patients with LANPC.

Background: The therapeutic efficacy and prognosis of various tumors can be assessed using the systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI). Despite their potential, no studies have investigated the prognostic value of the combined SII-PNI score for outcomes in patients with extensive small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) treated with chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs).

Materials And Methods: Our study retrospectively examined 213 ES-SCLC patients treated with chemotherapy and ICIs across two institutions.

Background: There is a strong association between inflammation and the formation, progression, and metastasis of malignant tumors, according to earlier studies. Some composite inflammation-nutritional indicators, such as the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), have a certain predictive effect on the prognosis of patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). However, the relationship between these indicators and the efficacy of immunotherapy in SCLC patients is still not well understood.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates whether combining the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) and Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) can effectively identify low-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) patients who may resist monotherapy.
  • It included a retrospective analysis of 91 patients treated between 2013 and 2021, where higher SII and lower PNI scores were linked to chemotherapy resistance.
  • Findings suggest that the SII-PNI score serves as a significant independent risk factor for resistance, with increased scores correlating with a higher percentage of resistant patients and delayed hCG normalization.

Background: The L-type amino acid transporter (LAT1) exhibits significantly increased expression within tumor cells across various neoplasms. However, the clinical significance of LAT1 expression in patients with pleural mesothelioma (PM) remains unclear.

Methods: Eighty patients diagnosed with PM between June 2007 and August 2022, were eligible for this study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the combined impact of the Prognosis Nutritional Index (PNI) and Systemic Inflammatory Immunological Index (SII) on predicting tumor response and prognosis in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) after chemotherapy.
  • A retrospective analysis of 181 LAGC patients was conducted, categorizing them into tumor regression grade (TRG) 3 and non-TRG3 groups, and assessing their SII and PNI values.
  • Results showed that higher SII-PNI scores were linked to better tumor responses and poorer overall and disease-free survival, indicating the SII-PNI score could be a useful predictor in clinical settings.
