The aggregation and sedimentation of micro/nano-plastics significantly affect their migration and distribution in the environment. This study investigated the effects of Na and natural organic matter (NOM) on the aggregation and sedimentation of polystyrene nano-plastics (PS-NPs) in the aqueous phase. Six types of water, such as seawater, lake water, and domestic sewage, were used to evaluate the above effects and other potential influencing factors. The results indicated that Na could facilitate the sedimentation of PS-NPs when it was less than 80 mmol·L, whereas it could promote the aggregation and suspension of PS-NPs when the concentration was greater than 80 mmol·L. NOM molecules affected the aggregation and sedimentation of PS-NPs by changing the potential and relative density of particles via forming a multilayer adsorption structure with Na on the particle surface. It was observed that NOM greater than 10 mg·L enhanced the dispersion and suspension of PS-NPs, which might have been attributed to the decrease in relative density of the particles as a large amount of NOM was absorbed onto the surface. Compared with synthetic waters, environmental waters enhanced the aggregation of PS-NPs, which may have been related to the amino acid, protein, and other organic macro-molecules in the water.

In response to the growing need to expand the knowledge base on novel, more sustainable protein sources, this study investigated the effectiveness of cowpea protein concentrate (CPC) as a natural emulsifying agent, examining the relationships between pH (3-11), oil concentration (2-10 %), and emulsion stability. pH and oil concentration significantly impacted droplet size distribution, with uniformity decreasing in the order of pH 9 > pH 11 > pH 7, which was attributed to droplet coalescence and flocculation. As evidenced by circular dichroism, alkalinity induced a slight increase in the beta-sheet content of CPC, while simultaneously reducing the alpha-helix content.

When an electric field is applied to or removed from colloidal particle aqueous dispersions, a reversible increase in sedimentation velocity of the colloidal particles, referred to as the Electrically Induced Rapid Separation (ERS) effect, is observed. While electrophoresis and other interfacial electrokinetic phenomena under applied electric fields are well-studied, the phenomena of particle aggregation and re-dispersion caused by the application and removal of the field remain largely unexplored despite their significance. Experiments using mixed aqueous dispersions of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles of different sizes revealed that applying an electric field induced the formation of co-flocs involving both large and small particles, significantly enhancing the sedimentation velocity.
