TGF-β supergene family has a wide range of physiological functions including cell adhesion, motility, proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. We systematically analyzed and characterized the TGF-β gene superfamily from the whole blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) genome, using comparative genomic and evolutionary analysis. We identified 30 TGF-β genes and were split into two subgroups, BMP-like and TGF-like. All TGF-β proteins demonstrating a basic nature, with the exception of BMP1, BMP2, BMP10, GDF2, MSTN, and NODAL modulator, had acidic characteristics. All the blue whale (B. musculus) TGF-β proteins, excluding BMP1, are thermostable based on aliphatic index. The instability index showed all proteins except the NODAL modulator was unstable. TGF-β proteins showed a hydrophilic character, with the exception of GDF1 and INHBC. Moreover, all the detected TGF-β genes showed evolutionary conserved nature. A segmental duplication was indicated by TGF-β gene family, and the Ka/Ks ratio showed that the duplicated gene pairs were subjected to selection pressure, indicating both purifying and positive selection pressure. Two possible recombination breakpoints were also predicted. This study provides insights into the genetic characterization and evolutionary aspects of the TGF-β superfamily in blue whales (B. musculus).

Dental caries is a highly prevalent chronic disease that leads to dental pulp inflammation. It is treated by removing the damaged tooth structure and applying a material that promotes resolution of pulpal inflammation. Tumor necrosis factor superfamily 14 (TNFSF14) is an immunomodulatory cytokine and a member of the TNF superfamily.

Purpose: The Stickler syndromes are a group of connective tissue disorders characterised by congenital myopia, giant retinal tear and retinal detachment, cleft palate, hearing loss and premature arthropathy. Patients with Stickler syndrome are also susceptible to abnormalities of the crystalline lens. Since neither type II or type XI collagen (those typically affected in the vast majority of Stickler patients) are highly expressed in the lens, this observational cohort study explores potential alternative mechanisms to explain why patients frequently exhibit such unusual but characteristic types of cataract.

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is a superfamily of phospholipase enzymes that dock at the water/oil interface of phospholipid assemblies, hydrolyzing the ester bond at the sn-2 position. The enzymatic activity of these enzymes differs based on the nature of the substrate, its supramolecular assemblies (micelle, liposomes), and their composition, reflecting the interfacial nature of the PLA2s and requiring assays able to directly quantify this interaction of the enzyme(s) with these supramolecular assemblies. We developed and optimized a simple, universal assay method employing the pH-sensitive indicator dye bromothymol blue (BTB), in which different POPC (3-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-1-phosphocholine) self-assemblies (liposomes or mixed micelles with Triton X-100 at different molar ratios) were used to assess the enzymatic activity.
