Medical textile implants: hybrid fibrous constructions towards improved performances. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Objectives: One main challenge for textile implants is to limit the foreign body reaction (FBR) and in particular the fibrosis development once the device is implanted. Fibrotic tissue in-growth depends on the fiber size, the pore size, and the organization of the fibrous construction. Basically, non-woven fibrous assemblies present a more favorable interface to biological tissues than do woven structures. However, they are mechanically less strong. In order to combine both strength and appropriate topography properties, the design of a hybrid fibrous construct was considered and discussed in this work.

Methods: Two polyethylene terephthalate (PET) weaves (satin and plain) were assembled with a non-woven PET mat, using an ultrasound welding process.

Results: The physical and mechanical properties of the construction as well as its ability to interact with the biological environment were then evaluated. In particular, the wettability of the obtained substrate as well as its ability to interact with mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) at 24 h (adhesion) and 72 h (proliferation) were studied.

Conclusions: The results show that the non-woven layer helps limiting cell proliferation in the plain weave construction and promotes conversely proliferation in the satin construction.

Progress on oxygen-releasing bioactive polymeric scaffolds in tissue engineering and biomedical treatment: A review.

Tissue engineering presents promising avenues for addressing issues related to tissue defects and regenerative medicine. However, the translational efficacy of tissue engineering in clinical settings remains limited, primarily due to the inadequate survival rates of implanted tissue scaffolds. This is attributed to the grafts' inability to adequately supply oxygen and their dependence on the diffusion of oxygen from surrounding tissues for tissue regeneration.

Air pollution such as particulate matter is always a serious threat to public health, thus many disposable and degradable air filters were designed to deal with this severe challenge avoiding the secondary pollution after discarding. Herein, inspired by the natural spider web structure, a hierarchical porous composite fibrous membrane containing web-like cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) was developed. The implanted porous CNF membranes with web-like among the inter-fiber voids of electrospun poly(ethylene-co-viny alcohol) fibrous membrane were realized via a layer-by-layer (LBL) method followed by an elevated-temperature drying, which exhibit a smaller diameter with one or two orders of magnitude reduction comparing with the substrate fibers.

The management of neurological disorders is profoundly complicated by spinal cord injury (SCI), which leads to the impairment of motor and sensory functions. A major challenge in the treatment of SCI is the formation of a dysfunctional pathological microenvironment characterized by an excessive inflammatory response, deposition of inhibitory molecules, glial scarring, and vascular dysfunction. A thorough understanding of the pathological and physiological changes following SCI is essential to elucidate the mechanisms underlying functional recovery and to develop effective therapeutic interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • Arteriovenous grafts, used in hemodialysis, often face serious issues like thrombosis and infections that hinder their effectiveness.
  • Researchers created a surface-modified nanohybrid hydrogel by combining clay nanoparticles coated with zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate onto a sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol base.
  • This new hydrogel demonstrated improved mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and antifouling properties, making it a promising option for use in blood-contacting implants.

Electronic address:

The photosensitive S-nitrosocysteine (CysNO) could respond to light irradiation to produce nitric oxide (NO), exhibiting tremendous potential in accelerating peripheral nerve regeneration. However, its further application was limited by the burst release of NO and the requirement for ultraviolet excitation with low tissue penetration. Herein, a near-infrared-triggered NO controlled release nanosystem UCNP@ZIF-8/CysNO consisting of an upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) core and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) shell loading with CysNO was constructed, and then blended with poly-l-lactic acid powder to fabricate nerve scaffold by laser additive manufacturing technique.
