This research aimed to synthesise an effective hydrochar adsorbent from vineyard pruning wastes to remove emerging contaminants as a potential valorisation product. The adsorption capacity of the hydrochar was optimised using the Taguchi method. Four synthesis variables were evaluated: hydrothermal reaction temperature, use of HPO as a catalyst, number of acetone washes, and type of chemical cold activation. The simultaneous adsorption of five model pesticides (clothianidin (CTD), acetamiprid (ACE), 2,4-D, metalaxyl (MET), and atrazine (ATZ)) at an initial pH of 7 was studied. At optimum conditions, the hydrochar presented a total adsorption capacity of 22.7 μmol/g, representing a 2.7-fold improvement with respect to pristine hydrochar performance. High percentage removals were achieved for all pollutants (85 % CTD, 94 % ACE, 86 % MET, and 95 % ATZ) except for 2,4-D (4 %). This research provides a valuable reference for developing hydrochar adsorbents for pollution control and the valorisation of biomass wastes.

In this study, the degradation behavior of poly(lactic acid) nanocomposite films (PLA/Hec-g@PS) under extreme natural environments was investigated, and the degraded PLA based films were applied to adsorb Cu(II). During the early and midstages of degradation, the surface roughness and crack propagation rate of PLA/Hec-g@PS films were significantly lower than those of PLA films. This could be due to the fact that Hec-g@PS enhanced the interaction forces between C-O-C + CH and C═O in the PLA chains, thereby mitigating the degradation of PLA.

Industrial wastes, including dyes and other chemicals, are significant sources of water pollution. The adsorption process is often explored in water purification. However, developing low-cost, sustainable adsorbents with good dye removal capacity remains challenging.

In this paper, Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide (Mg/Al-LDH) was modified with the natural polymers sodium alginate and guar gum, and the prepared GG/SA/Mg-Al-LDH composite microsphere adsorbent (G-LDH) showed better adsorption performance for Congo red and hexavalent chromium in aqueous solution than the Mg/Al-LDH. The adsorption and surface properties of G-LDH in terms of functional groups, basic constituent elements and structural properties were obtained by different techniques. SEM shows that the average particle size of G-LDH is between 400 and 900 nm and exhibits a distinct microsphere morphology.

To develop new green sustainable adsorbents, herein, psyllium, a polysaccharide, was transformed into a cationic material by introducing a quaternary ammonium group in its structure through a two-step process. Psyllium was epoxidized with epichlorohydrin to epoxy propyl form (Psy) and the resulting material was reacted with triethylamine to obtain a quaternized psyllium, Psy. Psy demonstrates selective elimination of anionic dyes (CR and MO).
