AI Article Synopsis

  • The research focused on creating new chloroquine analogues to test their effectiveness against microbes and cancer cells.
  • The synthesized analogues were found to have significant antimicrobial properties, with one analogue showing a 30.3 mm zone of inhibition against a specific microbe.
  • Additionally, one analogue demonstrated strong cytotoxic effects on HeLa cells, achieving 100% cell inhibition at a low concentration, outperforming the original chloroquine.

Article Abstract

To synthesize novel chloroquine analogues and evaluate them for antimicrobial and cytotoxic potential. Novel analogues were synthesized from chloroquine by nucleophilic substitution reaction at the 4-amino position. Analogue showed maximum antimicrobial potential (30.3 ± 0.15 mm zone) against and produced a 19.2 ± 0.21 mm zone against , while produced no zone at the same concentration. Analogue has excellent cytotoxic potential (HeLa cell line), showing 100% inhibition (IC = 8.9 ± 1.2 μg/ml), compared with (61.9% inhibition at 30 μg/ml). These synthesized chloroquine analogues have excellent activity against different microbial strains and cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa) compared with their parent molecule.

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have shown great potential as photothermal agents for cancer therapy. However, the biosafety of AuNRs ordinarily synthesized using a cationic ligand assistance procedure has always been a subject of controversy, which limits their application in tumor therapy. In this study, we propose a novel strategy to enhance the biocompatibility of AuNRs by constructing a biological coating derived from silk fibroin (SF) on their surface.

Genotoxicity testing of the anthraquinone dye Alizarin Red S.

Curr Res Toxicol

December 2024

Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Department of Food Safety, University of Bonn, Germany.

The anthraquinone dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) is used for marking live animals, specifically as a tool for monitoring the stock of the endangered European eel by marking caught fish with ARS before releasing the eels back into the wild. As ARS can be found in recaptured eels even years later, knowledge of potential health hazards of ARS is essential for assessing the food safety of eels marked with ARS. As the compound class of anthraquinones is known for their genotoxic and carcinogenic properties, concerns were raised regarding the food safety of marked eels.

In the past two decades, record-breaking heat waves have caused an increasing number of heat-related deaths, including heatstroke, globally. Heatstroke is a life-threatening systemic condition characterized by a core body temperature >40°C and the subsequent development of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Lung injury is a well-documented complication of heatstroke and is usually the secondary cause of patient death.

Synthesis, characterization and biological profile of some new dihydropyrimidinone derivaties.

Heliyon

January 2025

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Riphah Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Riphah International University, Islamabad, Pakistan, 44000.

Objective: The rise of drug-resistant bacteria, viruses, and fungi has prompted the search for new drugs without cross-resistance to current treatments. As a result, the aim of this research was to synthesize various types of dihydropyrimidinones heterocyclic compounds and screened them for their antibiotic properties.

Methodology: Newly synthesized dihydropyrimidinone derivatives were characterized spectroscopically using proton NMR (HNMR), and FT-IR.
