Background: Melanoma metastases to the CNS rank third in frequency, just after lung and breast metastases. There is controversy regarding the factors predisposing to developing CNS metastases in patients with cutaneous melanoma and their survival with conventional treatments.

Methods: We carried out a retrospective analysis in a third-level hospital in Mexico to determine epidemiological aspects of melanoma metastases to the central nervous system, factors related to its appearance, clinical presentation, and survival in three treatment groups: surgery, radiotherapy, and conservative management.

Results: We found that the nodular variant has the most significant association with CNS metastases. In addition, the superficial spreading variant has the highest risk of presenting a more substantial number of lesions, up to seven for each case and predominantly in the infratentorial space. On the other hand, we found more remarkable survival in patients treated only with surgery than those treated with radiotherapy or conservatively.

Conclusions: This study lays the foundations for future prospective survival analysis of the different current treatment modalities for metastatic melanoma in the brain and spine. It also highlights the clinical risk factors for metastatic brain and spine tumors of melanoma.

The Brain Tumor Group (BTG) of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) conducts academic clinical trials and translational research to improve clinical management of patients with primary and secondary brain tumors. The EORTC BTG has traditionally played an important role in providing evidence and thus advancing the field, albeit with a main focus on radiotherapy and pharmacotherapy in gliomas. Although examples of well-designed neuro-oncological surgical trials can be found, evidence in surgical neuro-oncology predominantly includes data from uncontrolled prospective series or retrospective cohorts.

Background: Nosocomial pneumonia is common in trauma patients and associated with an adverse prognosis. We recently externally validated and recalibrated an existing formula to predict nosocomial pneumonia risk. Identifying more potential predictors could aid in a more accurate prediction of nosocomial pneumonia risk in level-1 trauma patients.

A 48-year-old female presented to the ED with worsening headache and neck pain for the past week. Her medical history is significant for recurrent left-sided triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) with metastasis to the chest wall, liver, and lungs, initially diagnosed two years ago. She underwent a left-sided mastectomy and received radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Excitatory synapses and the actin-rich dendritic spines on which they reside are indispensable for information processing and storage in the brain. In the adult hippocampus, excitatory synapses must balance plasticity and stability to support learning and memory. However, the mechanisms governing this balance remain poorly understood.

The treatment of stress-related disorders such as anxiety and depression is still challenging. One potential therapeutical option are neurosteroids. Their synthesis is promoted by ligands of the mitochondrial translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO).
