Objectives: Our goal was to fill a literature gap regarding the impact of volunteering on volunteers' mental health.

Methods: Using social media platform "Facebook" volunteers were asked to fill in a self-developed research questionnaire concerning their well-being. The link to the survey remained open from April to May 2022. Overall, 867 participants' responses were analyzed, 703 were included. Respondents were divided into three groups according to how volunteering had affected their well-being. Subsequently two groups were extracted: volunteers operating in Ukraine and those hosting refugees at home. In each of these groups impact of volunteering on volunteers' well-being was examined.

Results: 45.10% of participants reported volunteering has positively affected their overall well-being, in 35.56% it had no impact and in 19.35% affected them negatively. Somatic symptoms of anxiety manifested in 11.10% and were more severe in 8.25%. 14.10% of participants reported a greater need of using psychoactive substances. Among volunteers who hosted refugees 52.23% felt increased tension and irritability. 18% of volunteers operating in Ukraine reported a need to see a psychiatrist or a psychologist.

Conclusions: Impact of volunteering on one's mental well-being ranged from positive to detrimental. Initial mood had significant impact on mental well-being after volunteering. The phenomenon of indirect trauma among non-professional volunteers is not sufficiently explored yet and requires further research.

Background: After suffering for an average of 7 years before diagnosis, endometriosis patients are usually left with more questions than answers about managing their symptoms in the absence of a cure. To help women with endometriosis after their diagnosis, we developed an online support program combining user research, evidence-based medicine, and clinical expertise. Structured around CBT and the quality-of-life metrics from the EHP score, the program is designed to guide participants over a 3-month and is available in France.

Involving participants in the design of clinical trials should improve the overall success of a study. For this to occur, streamlined mechanisms are needed to connect the populations potentially impacted by a given study or health topic with research teams in order to inform trial design in a meaningful and timely manner. To address this need, we developed an innovative mechanism called the "ResearchMatch Expert Advice Tool" that quickly obtains volunteer perspectives from populations with specific health conditions or lived experiences using the national recruitment registry, ResearchMatch.

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Wakayama Medical University, 811-1 Kimiidera, Wakayama City, Wakayama, 641-8509, Japan.

Background: A walking support orthosis known as the e-foot®, a rubber orthotic worn from the hip to the forefoot to enhance joint flexibility and movement, has been developed to assist elderly people and individuals with walking impairments. Despite its widespread acceptance and positive reception in some care settings, the precise impact of this device on gait dynamics remains unexplored. This study aims to bridge this gap by comparing the walking speeds of healthy volunteers using the e-foot® against their normal walking speeds.

Alzheimers Dement

Department of Psychiatry, Umass Chan Medical School, Shrewsbury, MA, USA.

Background: The ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE4+) genotype and aging synergistically contribute to the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the mechanisms underlying their influence are not completely understood. The methylation of ELOVL2 DNA accounts for 70% of the variance in the aging epigenetic clock. The ELOVL2 gene is essential for synthesizing long polyunsaturated fatty acids, crucial for cell membrane integrity, inflammation modulation, and energy maintenance.
