SARS-CoV-2 Infection of the Central Nervous System: A Case Report.

Viruses

December 2024

Department of Medical Oncology, Medical University of Sofia, University Hospital "Tsaritsa Yoanna", 1527 Sofia, Bulgaria.

Central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by SARS-CoV-2 are uncommon. This case report describes the clinical progression of a 92-year-old female who developed a persistent neuroinfection associated with SARS-CoV-2. The patient initially presented with progressive fatigue, catarrhal symptoms, and a fever (38.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease caused by the JC polyomavirus (JCPyV). Based on the clinical criteria, PML is diagnosed via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection of JCPyV DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in combination with neurological and imaging findings. Although the utility of CSF JCPyV testing using ultrasensitive PCR assays has been suggested, its potential requires further evaluation.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) represent a valuable source of biomarkers for central nervous system (CNS) diseases, offering new pathways for diagnosis and monitoring. However, existing methods for isolating EVs from CSF often prove to be labor-intensive and reliant on specialized equipment, hindering their clinical application. In this study, we present a novel, clinically compatible method for isolating EVs from CSF.

The Diagnostic Value of Cerebrospinal Fluid Neurogranin in Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Department of Neurodegeneration Diagnostics, Medical University of Bialystok, Waszyngtona 15A, 15-269 Białystok, Poland.

Synaptic pathology is crucial in neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), and numerous studies show a correlation between synaptic proteins and the rate of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia, and Creutzfeldt-Jacob's disease. Due to the fact that altered synaptic function is considered a core feature of the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders, synaptic proteins, such as neurogranin, may serve as a biomarker of these diseases. Neurogranin is a postsynaptic protein located in the cell bodies and dendrites of neurons, foremost in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and striatum.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by alpha-synuclein aggregation into Lewy bodies in the neurons. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is considered the most suited source for investigating PD pathogenesis and identifying biomarkers. While microRNA (miRNA) profiling can aid in the investigation of post-transcriptional regulation in neurodegenerative diseases, information on miRNAs in the CSF of patients with PD remains limited.
