Emergent microenvironments of nucleoli.

In higher eukaryotes, the nucleolus harbors at least three sub-phases that facilitate multiple functionalities including ribosome biogenesis. The three prominent coexisting sub-phases are the fibrillar center (FC), the dense fibrillar component (DFC), and the granular component (GC). Here, we review recent efforts in profiling sub-phase compositions that shed light on the types of physicochemical properties that emerge from compositional biases and territorial organization of specific types of macromolecules. We highlight roles played by molecular grammars which refers to protein sequence features including the substrate binding domains, the sequence features of intrinsically disordered regions, and the multivalence of these distinct types of domains / regions. We introduce the concept of a barcode of emergent physicochemical properties of nucleoli. Although our knowledge of the full barcode remains incomplete, we hope that the concept prompts investigations into undiscovered emergent properties and engenders an appreciation for how and why unique microenvironments control biochemical reactions.

Describing the crystal structure of disordered materials with mixed-occupancy crystallographic sites is essential for understanding their physicochemical properties and designing new materials tuned to their targeted functionalities. Here, we investigate the structure of RbMOF (M = Nb, Ta) pyrochlore-type oxyfluorides using a multimodal approach that combines experimental and computational techniques. Rietveld structural refinement of powder X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) data confirmed that these oxyfluorides are isostructural, and their average crystal structure is disordered.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a broad group of synthetic chemicals that have raised concerns related to their long-term environmental persistence and potential health risks. Although several efforts have been dedicated to establishing international restrictions on their use, the definition of what qualifies as a PFAS remains a matter of debate among scientists, regulatory agencies, and industry. This article provides a brief overview of the different approaches proposed and adopted to date for identifying and grouping of these pollutants, either based on common structural motifs or on the combination of multiple factors, including functional uses, degradation behavior, physicochemical properties, and toxicity.

The linseed processing was carried out on a laboratory scale to obtain the linseed protein concentrate (LPC), using the physical method. The analyzes were carried out on whole grains (WG), demucilated grains (DG) and LPC. In the fractions obtained, the chemical composition (dry matter, ash, lipids, crude protein, total dietary fiber, soluble fiber and insoluble fiber), total phenolic compounds and physicochemical properties were evaluated in the obtained fractions.

Topically applied therapies must not only be effective at the molecular level but also efficiently access the target site which can be on milli/centimetre-scales. This bottleneck is particularly inhibitory for peptide and nucleic acid macromolecule drug delivery strategies, especially when aiming to target wounded, infected, and poorly perfused tissues of significant volume and geometry. Methods to drive fluid-flow or to enhance physical distribution of such formulations after local administration in accessible tissues (skin, eye, intestine) would be transformative in realizing the potential of such therapeutics.
