Mechanochemical Birch Reduction with Low Reactive Alkaline Earth Metals.

Birch reduction and similar dissolved metal-type transformations hold significant importance in the organic synthesis toolbox. Historically, the field has been dominated by alkali metal reductants. In this study, we report that largely neglected, low-reactive alkaline earth metals can become powerful and affordable reductants when used in a ball mill under essentially solvent-free conditions, in the presence of ethylenediamine and THF as liquid additives. Calcium can reduce both electron-deficient and electron-rich arenes, with yields of products similar to those obtained with lithium metal. Magnesium reveals enhanced reducing power, enabling the reduction of benzoic acids while keeping electron-rich aromatic moieties intact and allows for chemoselective transformations. The developed mechanochemical approach uses readily available and safer-to-handle metals, operates under air and ambient temperature conditions, and can be used for gram-scale preparations. Finally, we demonstrate that the developed conditions can be used for other dissolved metal-type reductive transformations, including reductive amination, deoxygenation, dehalogenation, alkene and alkyne reductions.

The Zincke reaction and Birch reduction have been one of the few reactions that allow for ring opening of pyridines ever since the discovery of pyridine more than a century ago. This paper presents a new addition to the list of pyridine ring-opening reactions, reductive Zincke reaction, which affords saturated δ-amino ketones. Under the catalysis of a simple rhodium complex, pyridinium salts with diverse substituents are reduced with formic acid, ring-opened with water, transaminated with a secondary amine and further reduced to afford a wide range of δ-amino ketones, including those in which the alkane chain of the ketones is selectively deuterated or fluorinated.

Importance: For hospitalized critically ill adults with suspected sepsis, procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) monitoring protocols can guide the duration of antibiotic therapy, but the evidence of the effect and safety of these protocols remains uncertain.

Objective: To determine whether decisions based on assessment of CRP or PCT safely results in a reduction in the duration of antibiotic therapy.

Design, Setting, And Participants: A multicenter, intervention-concealed randomized clinical trial, involving 2760 adults (≥18 years), in 41 UK National Health Service (NHS) intensive care units, requiring critical care within 24 hours of initiating intravenous antibiotics for suspected sepsis and likely to continue antibiotics for at least 72 hours.

This research presents an innovative use of two hierarchical clustering methods (Agglomerative Hierarchical and BIRCH clustering algorithms) to detect accident hotspots with high accident rates on the Yazd-Kerman road, in Iran.
