Using 4-(3,6-dibromo-9-carbazol-9-yl)benzonitrile (DBCB) precursors, we successfully constructed two types of cyano-substituted polymers on Au(111) by the molecular beam epitaxy method. According to the geometry, the two polymers are referred to as w-type polymers composed of -dimers and z-type polymers composed of -dimers. The intermediate dimers and final polymers were well characterized by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (HR-STM). Moreover, the productivities of these two polymers can be controlled by adjusting the heating rate and different treatment methods. High heating rates and hot deposition can provide more ample space and time for molecular diffusion, which is conducive to the formation of w-type polymers with relatively low density. In addition, by combining scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have shown that the addition of CN groups reduces the band gap of the two polymers. Our investigation thus shows the controllable construction of nanostructures through efficient surface synthesis parameters and reveals the potential of using functional groups as tools to modify the electronic properties of polymers.

The focus of this work was to evaluate the differences between the thermal and mechanical effects generated by ultrasound waves on the properties of corn starch, which facilitate the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis for the generation of porous starches. The results showed that both the thermal and mechanical effects have the capacity to disorganize/alter the structure of starch, impacting on its properties. Characteristics such as particle size, pasting and thermal properties (peak viscosity 1400-1800 cp.

Practical Zn metal batteries have been hindered by several challenges, including Zn dendrite growth, undesirable side reactions, and unstable electrode/electrolyte interface. These issues are particularly more serious in low-concentration electrolytes. Herein, we design a Zn salt-mediated electrolyte with in situ ring-opening polymerization of the small molecule organic solvent.

Precise control of nanobubble size is essential for optimizing the efficiency and performance of nanobubble applications across diverse fields, such as agriculture, water treatment, and medicine. Producing fine bubbles, including nanobubbles, is commonly achieved by purging gas through porous media, such as ceramic or polymer membranes. Many operational factors and membrane properties can significantly influence nanobubble production and characteristics.

Despite advancements in chronic arthritis treatment, there remains a significant demand for advanced nanotechnologies capable of efficiently delivering a wide range of therapeutic agents to provide symptomatic relief and facilitate the healing of inflamed cartilage tissue. Considering the significant impact of hypoxia on the development and maintenance of chondral tissue, replicating its effects on stem cells could be a potential approach for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Cobalt is a prominent hypoxia-inducing agent, owing to its ability to activate the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) pathway regardless of cellular oxygen levels.

Unlabelled: Bacteria transport proteins across the plasma membrane to assemble their envelope, acquire nutrients, and establish appropriate interactions with their environment. The majority of these proteins are synthesized as precursors with a cleavable N-terminal signal sequence for recognition by the Sec machinery. In , a small subset of secreted precursors carries a YSIRK/GXXS motif.
