The human exhalation flow is characterized in this work from the three-dimensional velocimetry results obtained by using the stereo particle image velocimetry (SPIV) measurement technique on the flow emitted from a realistic airway model. For this purpose, the transient exhalation flow through the mouth of a person performing two different breaths corresponding to two metabolic rates, standing relaxed (SR) and walking active (WA), is emulated and studied. To reproduce the flow realistically, a detailed three-dimensional model obtained from computed tomography measurements on real subjects is used. To cope with the variability of the experimental data, a subsequent analysis of the results is performed using the TR-PIV (time resolved particle image velocimetry) technique. Exhalation produces a transient jet that becomes a puff when flow emission ends. Three-dimensional vector fields of the jet velocity are obtained in five equally spaced transverse planes up to a distance of Image 1 from the mouth at equally spaced time instants Image 2 which will be referred to as phases (), from the beginning to the end of exhalation. The time evolution during exhalation of the jet area of influence, the velocity field and the jet air entrainment have been characterized for each of the jet cross sections. The importance of the use of realistic airway models for the study of this type of flow and the influence of the metabolic rate on its development are also analyzed. The results obtained contribute to the characterization of the human exhalation as a pathway of the transmission of pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Use of Lung Volume Recruitment Technique in Patients With Chronic Respiratory Disease Among Brazilian Health Professionals.

Pulm Med

January 2025

Post Graduation Department, Escola Superior de Ciências da Saúde (ESCS), Brasilia, Distrito Federal, Brazil.

Lung volume recruitment (LVR) is a stacked-breath assisted inflation technique in which consecutive insufflations are delivered, without exhaling in between, until the maximum tolerable inflation capacity is reached. Although LVR is recommended in some neuromuscular disease guidelines, there is little information detailing when and how allied health professionals (AHPs) prescribe LVR. This study is aimed at describing the use of LVR in practice across Brazil.

Short-term modification of breathprint by Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor in a paediatric cohort.

Background: The triple combination Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor (ETI) translates into major respiratory improvements in adults; yet current clinical endpoints may prove insufficiently sensitive in young children. We hypothesised that ETI rapidly modifies the lungs' metabolism, resulting in changes in breath composition.

Methods: Eleven children with CF were enrolled in a longitudinal pilot study at the paediatric Necker hospital.

Objective: To investigate the diagnostic value of immunoglobulin E (IgE), fractional of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), and peripheral blood eosinophils (EOS) in adult bronchial asthma and to analyze their relationship with asthma severity.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 336 patients diagnosed with bronchial asthma and admitted to Xi'an Fourth Hospital from January 2022 to January 2024, forming the asthma group. Additionally, another 127 healthy subjects were selected as the non-asthmatic control group.

Background And Objective: Coughing events are eruptive sources of virus-laden droplets/droplet nuclei. These increase the risk of infection in susceptible individuals during airborne transmission. The oral cavity functions as an exit route for exhaled droplets.

Typical waveforms used for the simulation of pressure and volume-controlled ventilation in medical ventilators have been extensively studied in the literature. The majority of simulation studies reported employ the step pattern or ramp pattern to model the pressure and flow variations in pressure/volume-controlled ventilation. It was observed that the above waveforms tend to add to the discomfort level of patients due to the presence of jerks in derivatives of pressure/flow variations; the pressure/flow variation of air and oxygen mixture should be smooth so that the patient discomfort is kept at a minimal level.
