Nearly a decade has passed since the discovery of superconductivity in CrAs, but until now, the discovered structure types of chromium-based superconductors are still scanty. It is urgent to expand this family to decipher the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity penetratingly. Here, we report the observation of superconductivity in ferromagnet CrSbSe with a quasi-one-dimensional structure under high pressure. Under compression, CrSbSe undergoes an insulator-to-metal transition and sequential isostructural phase transitions accompanied by volume collapse. Superconductivity emerges at 32.8 GPa concomitant with metallization in CrSbSe. A maximum superconducting transition temperature of 7.7 K is achieved at 57.9 GPa benefiting from both the phonon softening and the enhanced p-d hybridization between Se and Cr in CrSbSe. The discovery of superconductivity in CrSbSe expands the existing chromium-based superconductor family and sheds light on the search for concealed superconductivity in low-dimensional van der Waals materials.

CrSbSe─the only experimentally validated one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic semiconductor─has recently attracted significant attention. However, all reported synthesis methods for CrSbSe nanocrystals are based on top-down methods. Here we report a template selection strategy for the bottom-up synthesis of CrSbSe nanoribbons.

Driven by numerous discoveries of novel physical properties and integration into functional devices, interest in one-dimensional (1D) magnetic nanostructures has grown tremendously. Traditionally, such structures are accessed with bottom-up techniques, but these require increasing sophistication to allow precise control over crystallinity, branching, aspect ratio, and surface termination, especially when approaching the subnanometer regime in magnetic phases. Here, we show that mechanical exfoliation of bulk quasi-one-dimensional crystals, a method similar to those popularized for two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) lattices, serves as an efficient top-down method to produce ultrathin freestanding nanowires that are both magnetic and semiconducting.
