Assessment of the thymus in fetuses prior to spontaneous preterm birth using functional MRI.

Early Hum Dev

January 2025

Department of Women and Children's Health, St Thomas' Hospital, King's College London, London, UK; Department of Perinatal Imaging, St Thomas' Hospital, King's College London, London, UK.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to utilise T2* relaxometry (an indirect method of quantifying tissue oxygenation) to assess the fetal thymus in uncomplicated pregnancies throughout gestation and in a cohort of fetuses that subsequently deliver very preterm.

Methods: A control group of participants with low-risk pregnancies were recruited and retrospectively excluded if they developed any pregnancy related complications after scanning. Participants were recruited who were deemed to be at very high risk of delivery prior to 32 weeks' gestation and retrospectively excluded if they did not deliver prior to this gestation.

Reichert's membrane - A continuing enigma for developmental biologists.

Dev Biol

January 2025

Developmental Biology & Cancer Department, UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, London, UK. Electronic address:

Reichert's membrane (RM) is a basement membrane of gigantic proportions that surrounds the mammalian embryo following implantation. It is part of the parietal yolk sac, which originates from the wall of the preimplantation blastocyst. RM persists from implantation to birth in rodents and analogous structures occur in other mammals, including primates.

Ferumoxytol-enhanced MRI of retroplacental clear space disruption in placenta accreta spectrum.

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, 77030, USA; The Singleton Department of Radiology, Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, TX, 77030, USA. Electronic address:

Introduction: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) occurs when the placenta is pathologically adherent to the myometrium. An intact retroplacental clear space (RPCS) is a marker of normal placentation. In this study, we investigate use of the FDA-approved iron supplement ferumoxytol for contrast-enhanced MRI of the RPCS in mouse models of normal pregnancy and PAS.

Insights from a publicly funded homebirth program.

Women Birth

January 2025

School of Nursing and Midwifery, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, University of Newcastle, Australia.

Background: There are high levels of consumer demand for homebirth in Australia, however access is limited due to a wide range of factors, including associated costs of a private midwife and the limited number of publicly funded homebirth models. Homebirth with a qualified midwife, networked into a health system, is a safe option for women with a low-risk pregnancy. This paper has two aims.

The placenta plays a critical role in nutrient and oxygen exchange during pregnancy, yet the effects of medicinal drugs on this selective barrier remain poorly understood. To overcome this, this study presents a cost-effective bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) system to assess tight junction integrity and monolayer formation in BeWo b30 cells, a widely used model of the multinucleated maternal-fetal exchange surface of the placental barrier. Cells were cultured on collagen-coated porous membranes and treated with forskolin to induce controlled syncytialization.
