Published: March 2024

Meta-atoms are the building blocks of metamaterials, which are employed to control both generation and propagation of light as well as provide novel functionalities of localization and directivity of electromagnetic radiation. In many cases, simple dielectric or metallic resonators are employed as meta-atoms to create different types of electromagnetic metamaterials. Here, we fabricate and study composed of coupled perovskite quantum dots. We reveal that these multiscale structures exhibit specific emission properties, such as spectrum splitting and polaritonic effects. We believe that such multiscale supercrystal meta-atoms will provide novel functionalities in the design of many novel types of active metamaterials and metasurfaces.

Mott metal-insulator transitions possess electronic, magnetic, and structural degrees of freedom promising next-generation energy-efficient electronics. A previously unknown, hierarchically ordered, and anisotropic supercrystal state is reported and its intrinsic formation characterized in-situ during a Mott transition in a CaRuO thin film. Machine learning-assisted X-ray nanodiffraction together with cryogenic electron microscopy reveal multi-scale periodic domain formation at and below the film transition temperature (T ≈ 200-250 K) and a separate anisotropic spatial structure at and above T.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists try to copy nature's amazing structures, but making complex supercrystals from tiny particles (called nanoparticles) is hard because they're usually very symmetrical.
  • This study looks at how the shape of these nanoparticles and their shapes' confinement in specially designed molds can help them stick together to form new supercrystals.
  • The researchers found that the edges of the mold help direct the growth of the crystals and that having flat surfaces is important for making sure they grow the right way, which could help create new types of materials.

Computational modeling of plasmonic periodic structures are challenging due to their multiscale nature. On one hand, nanoscale building blocks require very fine spatial discretization of the computation domain to describe the near-field nature of the localized surface plasmons. On the other hand, the microscale supercrystals require large simulation domains.

Biomaterials often display outstanding combinations of mechanical properties thanks to their hierarchical structuring, which occurs through a dynamically and biologically controlled growth and self-assembly of their main constituents, typically mineral and protein. However, it is still challenging to obtain this ordered multiscale structural organization in synthetic 3D-nanocomposite materials. Herein, we report a new bottom-up approach for the synthesis of macroscale hierarchical nanocomposite materials in a single step.
