In this research, the influence of titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticles and their modifications on the weathering resistance of untreated and heat-treated wood was studied. The wood samples were coated with polyacrylate waterborne emulsion coatings that contain nano-TiO in the amount of 0.75 wt.%. Two types of modifiers were used to modify the nano-TiO surface: 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamide) dihydrochloride (AIBA) and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (AMPTS). Coated and uncoated wood samples were exposed to accelerated weathering by application of sunlight, water and moisture for 360 h. During the research, the dry film thickness, color, gloss and hardness of the surface of the samples were measured. The obtained results showed that the effect of the addition and surface modification of nano-TiO on the color and gloss stability was different on untreated and heat-treated ash wood, and that accelerated weathering causes an increase in surface hardness and a decrease in thickness of the dry coating.

Assessing the impact of limited and extended oven heating exposure on the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic composition of wheat-processed products with varying formulations.

Food Chem

This study aims to assess the effects of oven heating on the isotopic ratios of eight formulated wheat-processed products with different gluten-to-starch ratios. Two heating treatments were applied: limited heating in an oven with exposure to 100 °C for a specific time (cooking time-dependent) and extended heating in an oven with exposure to 100 °C, 180 °C and 260 °C for 6 min. Results showed limited heating exposure did not alter the δH and δO in the wheat-processed products.

Challenges and Performance of Filter Dusts as a Supplementary Cementitious Material.

Materials (Basel)

November 2024

Facultad de Ingeniería, CIFICEN (CONICET, CICBPA, UNCPBA), Olavarría B7400, Argentina.

Global industry relies on a linear approach for economic growth. One step towards transformation is the implementation of a circular economy and the reclamation of anthropogenic deposits. This study examines two filter dusts, one German and one Argentinian, from the production of calcined clays, representing such deposits.

Residual Stress Homogenization of Hybrid Implants.

Bioengineering (Basel)

November 2024

DENS-ia Research Group, Faculty of Health Sciences, Miguel de Cervantes European University, C/del Padre Julio Chevalier 2, 47012 Valladolid, Spain.

Objectives: Hybrid implants commonly exhibit decreased corrosion resistance and fatigue due to differences in compressive residual stresses between the smooth and rough surfaces. The main objective of this study was to investigate the influence of an annealing heat treatment to reduce the residual stresses in hybrid implants.

Methodology: Commercially pure titanium (CpTi) bars were heat-treated at 800 °C and different annealing times.

In this study, three kinds of thermal treatments were applied to sweet potatoes: steaming (100 °C, 20 min), frying (150 °C, 10 min), and baking (200 °C, 30 min). We analyzed the changes in the physicochemical structure, antioxidant properties, and hypoglycemic activities of sweet potato polysaccharides between untreated and heat-treated samples. The results showed that the polysaccharides of all sweet potatoes (untreated and heat-treated) were composed of pyranose structures, had low protein content, and shared the same monosaccharide composition.

Pigmented rice grass juice (RGJ) is a good source of bioactive compounds, but fresh juice has a relatively short shelf life of only 7 days at 4 °C. The objectives of this study were to determine the optimal growth stage of pigmented rice grass, investigate the optimal condition of high-pressure processing (HPP) for bacterial inactivation in inoculated RGJ using response surface methodology (RSM), and evaluate quality changes in uninoculated HPP-treated juice during storage at 4 °C compared with heat-treated (85 °C/10 min) and untreated samples. Results revealed that the optimal growth stage of rice grass was 9 days with the highest total anthocyanin content of 158.
