The intricate functionality of the vertebrate retina relies on the interplay between neurotransmitter activity and calcium (Ca) dynamics, offering important insights into developmental processes, physiological functioning, and disease progression. Neurotransmitters orchestrate cellular processes to shape the behavior of the retina under diverse circumstances. Despite research to elucidate the roles of individual neurotransmitters in the visual system, there remains a gap in our understanding of the holistic integration of their interplay with Ca dynamics in the broader context of neuronal development, health, and disease. To address this gap, the present review explores the mechanisms used by the neurotransmitters glutamate, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glycine, dopamine, and acetylcholine (ACh) and their interplay with Ca dynamics. This conceptual outline is intended to inform and guide future research, underpinning novel therapeutic avenues for retinal-associated disorders.

Affinity for OH Produces Four-Coordinated Zn Impurities in Hydrated Amorphous Calcium Carbonate.

Inorg Chem

January 2025

Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Washington 99352, United States.

Using ab initio based molecular dynamics and electronic structure calculations, we show that Zn impurities in hydrated amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) have a much lower coordination number than other divalent impurities due to covalent interactions between the 3d Zn shell and the oxygen atoms of the carbonate and water groups. The local structure around Zn in ACC, including the predicted low coordination number, is confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy of synthetic Zn-bearing ACC. The strong Zn-O chemical interaction leads to substantial water dissociation and slightly disrupts the hydrogen bonding network.

Mitochondrial ATP production and calcium buffering are critical for metabolic regulation and neurotransmission making the formation and maintenance of the mitochondrial network a critical component of neuronal health. Cortical pyramidal neurons contain compartment-specific mitochondrial morphologies that result from distinct axonal and dendritic mitochondrial fission and fusion profiles. We previously showed that axonal mitochondria are maintained at a small size as a result of high axonal mitochondrial fission factor (Mff) activity.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Mukta Pishti (MKP) is a traditional Ayurvedic medicine described in classical textbook 'Rasatarangini' and synthesized from marine pearls following classical methodology. MKP is used as therapeutic medicine against hyperacidity, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastric ulcers.

Aim Of The Study: Here, we explored the therapeutic properties of MKP in alleviating peptic ulcer in Male Wistar rat model of pylorus ligation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is tightly linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, calcium (Ca²⁺) imbalance, and oxidative stress. Mitochondrial Ca²⁺ is essential for regulating metabolic enzymes, maintaining the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, supporting the electron transport chain (ETC), and producing ATP. Additionally, Ca²⁺ modulates oxidative balance by regulating antioxidant enzymes and reactive oxygen species (ROS) clearance.

Serum macromineral dynamics and milk production of old Holstein cows submitted to a postpartum delayed milking strategy.

Lactation initiates with a massive Ca secretion into milk. Within 24-48h post-calving, high-producing, older-parity dairy cows are highly susceptible to Ca disturbances. We hypothesized that the abrupt cessation of milking within this critical period would delay Ca secretion into milk, allowing lactating cows more time to stabilize their Ca homeostasis mechanisms and potentially lower the risk of blood Ca decline in the immediate postpartum period.
