This paper addresses a retrofitting vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) setup to reduce the accumulated pressure inside the permeated side. This modification is necessary to extend the operation of the VMD to extreme operation conditions of higher hot water temperatures. This modification, denoted as a hybrid configuration, proposes the injection of a cold water stream into the VMD cell without mixing it with the permeate. Energy and exergy efficiency analyses were performed to assess the effectiveness of the hybrid configuration. The performance of the modified system indicated an improvement in terms of permeate flux (J), the gain output ratio (GOR), and the utilitarian exergetic efficiency (η), which reach up to two and three times that of the base configuration of the VMD system. However, the exergetic efficiency (η) of the hybrid system showed marginal improvement compared to the base case over the tested range of hot water temperatures. This is because the enhanced vapor production is penalized by excess energy consumption. Moreover, the highest exergy destruction percentages occurred in the operational components (e.g., heater and chillers) which fall in the range of 19.0-68.9%. The exergy destruction percentage in the original components (e.g., the VMD cell and condenser) did not exceed 8.3%. Furthermore, this study indicated that the hybrid configuration requires additional tuning and optimization to perform efficiently over wide operating conditions.

We report a hybrid Brillouin optical frequency/correlation-domain analysis technique, capable of accurate and high spatial resolution Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) profile measurements in optical fibers. The method relies on a conventional Brillouin optical frequency domain analysis (BOFDA) configuration, with an additional sinusoidal frequency modulation (FM) applied to the pump and probe beams. Such frequency modulation synthetizes a sequence of narrow correlation peaks along the fiber, which are simultaneously interrogated through BOFDA.

The ensemble properties of a system are obtained by averaging over the properties calculated for the various configurations it can have at a finite temperature and thus cannot be captured by a single molecular structure. Such ensemble properties are often important in material discovery. In designing new materials, the goal is to predict those ensemble structures that display a tailored property.

Objective: Both the en bloc island technique and the branched graft technique (BGT) present advantages but also limitations in aortic arch surgery. Here is the first presentation of an innovative prosthesis for aortic arch replacement, conceived to overcome the disadvantages of both techniques.
Methods: The novel ISLAND graft is a tubular Dacron or hybrid prosthesis with an additional extended Dacron graft ("bubble") on the superior aspect, for en bloc island graft anastomosis.

Investigating the impact of heteroatom alloying extents on regulating the cluster structures is crucial for the fabrication of cluster-based nanomaterials with customized properties. Herein, two structurally comparable PdAu ( = 1, 2) nanoclusters with a uniform surface environment but completely distinct kernel configurations were controllably synthesized and structurally determined. The single Pd-alloyed Pd1Au12 nanocluster retained an icosahedral metal framework, while the Pd2Au12 nanocluster with two Pd heteroatoms exhibited a unique toroidal configuration.

Photonics bound states in the continuum (BICs) are peculiar localized states in the continuum of free-space waves, unaffected by far-field radiation loss. Although plasmonic nano-antennas squeeze the optical field to nanoscale volumes, engineering the emergence of quasi-BICs with plasmonic hotspots remains challenging. Here, the origin of symmetry-protected (SP) quasi-BICs in a 2D system of silver-filled dimers, quasi-embedded in a high-index dielectric waveguide, is investigated through the strong coupling between photonic and plasmonic modes.
