Background: In mesothelioma (MPM), clinical evidence indicates that the absolute eosinophil count negatively correlates with overall survival and response to standard chemotherapy. Since eosinophils poorly infiltrate MPM tumours, we hypothesised that endocrine rather than paracrine pathways mediate the therapeutic response. We thus studied the effect of eosinophil-associated factors on response to chemotherapy in mesothelioma.

Eosinophils not only function as inflammatory effectors in allergic diseases, but also contribute to tissue homeostasis in steady state. Emerging data are revealing tissue eosinophils to be adaptive cells, imprinted by their local tissue microenvironment and exhibiting distinct functional phenotypes that may contribute to their homeostatic vs. inflammatory capacities.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are innate-like T cells that can be activated by microbial antigens and cytokines and are abundant in mucosal tissues including the colon. MAIT cells have cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory functions and have potentials for use as adoptive cell therapy. However, studies into their anti-cancer activity, including their role in colon cancer, are limited.
