Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are used in numerous industrial sectors and contribute to reducing CO emissions due to their outstanding properties in lightweight design. However, sustainable alternatives must be developed since the matrix polymers utilised contain substances hazardous to health and the environment. In widely used epoxy resins, the curing agents are mainly critical. Using biomolecules instead of synthetic curing agents can significantly reduce composites' toxicity and petrol-based carbon content. This study considerably exceeds the thermo-mechanical properties of epoxies cured with amino acids described in the literature until now. It demonstrates competitive or even better properties than state-of-the-art epoxies cured with petrol-based amine curing agents. For instance, the tensile strength of arginine-cured epoxy is more than twice as high as reported before and 13.5% higher compared to the petrol-based reference. At the same time, a high elongation at break of over 6% was accomplished, making these polymers suitable as matrix materials in FRPs. Furthermore, the glass transition onset of up to 130 °C is sufficiently high for many applications. The key to success is the development of individual curing profiles based on thermokinetic analysis. The work provides the development and analysis of several biomolecule-cured epoxies with promising property spectra.

Antimicrobial Silicon Rubber Crosslinked with Bornyl-Siloxane.

Macromol Rapid Commun

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Organic-Inorganic Composites, Beijing Laboratory of Biomedical Materials, College of Life Science and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing, 100029, P. R. China.

Silicone rubber (SiR) has a wide range of medical applications, but it lacks antimicrobial properties, leading to potential infection issues with related implants or medical devices. Most studies focus on adding anti-bacterial agents or surface modification, which usually result in composites with anti-bacterial properties, rather than synthesizing SiR with intrinsically antimicrobial performances. To tackle this issue, a double substituted bornyl-siloxane crosslinker (BC) is designed.

Background: Nocardia are widely present in nature and considered opportunistic pathogens. They can result in hematogenous spread infection through the ruptured skin or respiratory tract when the host's immune system is compromised. Currently, 119 species of Nocardia have been identified, with 54 capable of causing infections in humans.

Currently, few studies have been conducted on the use of fluorocarbon resin (FEVE) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as adhesive substrates and lubricating and anti-corrosion fillers, respectively, for the fabrication of PTFE-reinforced fluorocarbon composite coatings. In this paper, the tribological properties of polytetrafluoroethylene-reinforced fluorocarbon composite coatings were investigated through orthogonal tests under various operating conditions. The optimal configuration for coating preparation under dry friction and aqueous lubrication was thus obtained: the optimal filler particle size, mass ratio of FEVE to PTFE, spraying pressure, and curing agent content were 50 μm, 3:4.

In this study, CO reacted with a curing agent through nucleophilic addition to form ammonium salts, enabling the stable capture and internal release of CO, which achieved gas-phase nucleation and foaming. Additionally, the introduction of wave-absorbing agents improved the absorption mechanism and promoted uniform foaming. This nucleation-free foaming process relies on the induced growth of gas nuclei and the synergistic effect of the wave-absorbing agents, effectively preventing the uneven foaming issues caused by traditional nucleating agents.

Research on the Mechanical Properties of EPS Lightweight Soil Mixed with Fly Ash.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

School of Civil Engineering, Architectural and Environment, Hubei University of Technology, Wuhan 430068, China.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) bead-lightweight soil composites are a new type of artificial geotechnical material with low density and high strength. We applied EPS bead-lightweight soil in this project, replacing partial cement with fly ash to reduce construction costs. EPS beads were used as a lightweight material and cement and fly ash as curing agents in the raw soil were used to make EPS lightweight soil mixed with fly ash.
