Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by progressive harm to the optic nerve that often results in loss of vision and blindness. Recent studies suggest that deregulation in the expression of a particular type of RNAs named long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) can impact the development of glaucoma and, hence, are promising targets for drug discovery. LncRNAs are transcripts with a length longer than 200 nucleotides that are not translated into proteins.

Background: Ocular following responses (OFRs)-small-amplitude, short-latency reflexive eye movements-have been used to study visual motion processing, with potential diagnostic applications. However, they are difficult to record with commercial, video-based eye trackers, especially in children.

Objective: We aimed to design and develop a noninvasive eye tracker specialized for measuring OFRs, trading off lower temporal resolution and a smaller range for higher spatial resolution.

Background: The cornea plays a role in the refractive power of the eye, and when its natural curvature and thickness are compromised by diseases such as keratoconus or high myopia, this results in loss of visual acuity. Intracorneal rings (ICRs) were developed as a treatment option to restore the natural corneal curvature by implanting rings into tunnels cut within the corneal stroma. However, selecting and placing the appropriate ring can be difficult, and predicting refractive outcomes is challenging.

Article Synopsis
  • - The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, has evolved unique traits like pigment loss due to natural selection in cave habitats and serves as an important species for studying evolution, with a chromosome count of 2n = 50.
  • - Researchers utilized advanced techniques including whole chromosome isolation and sequencing to analyze the structure of a specific chromosome (chromosome 1) in A. mexicanus, contributing to the understanding of its genetic makeup.
  • - Findings showed strong conservation of chromosome features across related species, suggesting a shared evolutionary origin, and the gathered data can be useful for comparative studies in other fish species of the same family.
