High-performance flexible semiconductor material can be used as an excellent multifunctional matrix for in-situ ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection and synchronous photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic residues in aquatic ecosystem. Here, a calcium-doped TiO flexible matrix with double defects (surface oxygen vacancy defect and Ti energy level defect) was developed by its "in-situ one-step" hydrothermal synthesis on cotton fabric for the above purposes. Due to the joint contribution of double defects, a multi-channel charge transfer mode and a high-efficiency carrier separation are achieved, which endows flexible cotton fabric/Ca-doped TiO (Cot/Ca-TiO) substrate with the greatly boosted SERS effect for in-situ detection of antibiotic residues on fish body surface and in fishpond water by a simple wiping or dipping sampling method, even for simultaneous identification of multi-component residues. The detection limits of three antibiotic residues (enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and enoxacin) are as low as 10 M, which are far lower than the EU standard. More meaningfully, the flexible Cot/Ca-TiO can be used as a multifunctional filter-membrane type photocatalyst for efficient on-site degradation of antibiotic residues in flowing fishpond water by a multi-grade photocatalysis means. Moreover, the flexible matrix exhibits good recyclability in both actual detection and photocatalysis.

Urban rivers are the main water bodies humans frequently come into contact with, so the risks posed are closely monitored. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) residues in reclaimed water pose serious risks to human health. There are urgent needs to improve the understanding of distribution of and risks posed by ARGs in urban rivers.

Background: Aquaculture systems that sporadically depend on antibiotics can contribute to the development of adverse effects on the fish, microbial flora and the environment. This study sought to investigate the impacts of extended oxytetracycline supplementation on the freshwater stinging catfish through a multi-biomarker approach.

Methods: A total of 300 (20 ± 0.

Tetracyclines (TCs) are widely employed for the prevention and treatment of diseases in animals besides being deployed to promote animal growth and weight gain. Such practices result in trace amounts of TCs occurrence in water and foodstuffs of animal origin, including eggs and milk, thus posing severe health risks to humans. To ensure the food and water safety and to avoid exposure to humans, the removal of TC residues from food and water has recently garnered a considerable attention.

This review examines the potential of aggregation-induced luminescence (AIE) materials in lateral flow assays (LFA) to enhance the sensitivity and specificity of a range of assay applications. LFA is a straightforward and effective paper-based platform for the rapid detection of target analytes in mixtures. Its simple design, low cost, and ease of operation are among the most attractive advantages of LFA.

Novel inhibition of sortase A by plantamajoside: implications for controlling multidrug-resistant infections.

Appl Environ Microbiol

Department of Gastrocolorectal Surgery, General Surgery Center, The First Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, Jilin, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The research introduces plantamajoside (PMS) as an innovative inhibitor of sortase A (SrtA), an enzyme crucial for the virulence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), showcasing its potential in combating multi-drug resistant pathogens.
  • PMS effectively reduces MRSA's ability to adhere to surfaces and form biofilms, leading to increased survival rates in infected cell models and proving beneficial in animal models by lowering mortality rates and bacterial loads.
  • The findings emphasize the significance of targeting specific bacterial mechanisms, such as SrtA, to develop new therapeutic strategies against antibiotic-resistant infections, particularly MRSA.
