Introduction: Digital health techniques were adopted faster during COVID-19, but the gap remains. This study analyzes how the digital gap affected pandemic patient portal uptake during and after. Patient portals improve physician connections and patient health information access, increasing health outcomes.

Glucagon-like peptides agonists promote maturation of intestinal organoids derived from neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis.

Pediatr Surg Int

January 2025

Department of General and Thoracic Surgery, The Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, 1526-555 University Ave, Toronto, ON, M5G 1X8, Canada.

Purpose: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) majorly affects premature infants, causing not only necrosis and inflammation but also feeding intolerance and gastrointestinal dysmotility, hinting at gut hormone secretion impairment. Particularly critical is the gestation period before 26 weeks where intestinal hormonal activity is partially developed, rendering preterm neonates highly susceptible to NEC. Emerging evidence suggests a role of gut hormones, especially glucagon-like peptides (GLP) in ileum development.

Previous research on cadmium (Cd) focused on toxicity, neglecting hormesis and its mechanisms. In this study, pakchoi seedlings exposed to varying soil Cd concentrations (CK, 5, 10, 20, 40 mg/kg) showed an inverted U-shaped growth trend (hormesis characteristics): As Cd concentration increases, biomass exhibited hormesis character (Cd5) and then disappear (Cd40). ROS levels rose in both Cd treatments, with Cd5 being intermediate between CK and Cd40.

Novel adaptive immune systems in pristine Antarctic soils.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, University of Pretoria, Hatfield, Pretoria, 0028, South Africa.

Antarctic environments are dominated by microorganisms, which are vulnerable to viral infection. Although several studies have investigated the phylogenetic repertoire of bacteria and viruses in these poly-extreme environments with freezing temperatures, high ultra violet irradiation levels, low moisture availability and hyper-oligotrophy, the evolutionary mechanisms governing microbial immunity remain poorly understood. Using genome-resolved metagenomics, we test the hypothesis that Antarctic poly-extreme high-latitude microbiomes harbour diverse adaptive immune systems.

The Interplay between Metabolic Reprogramming, Mitochondrial Impairment, and Steroid Response in Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy.

Free Radic Biol Med

January 2025

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Retinal Functions and Diseases, Tianjin Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Disease, Eye Institute and School of Optometry, Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin, P. R. China, No.251 Fu Kang Road, Nankai District, Tianjin 300384, P. R. China. Electronic address:

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a major cause of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair failure. Despite many attempts to find therapeutics for PVR, no pharmacotherapy has been proven effective. Steroids, as the epitome, show uncertain clinical effectiveness, which lacks an explanation and hints at unappreciated mechanisms of PVR.
