Objectives: To determine the levels of zinc in hair and serum samples of chronic telogen effluvium patients.

Methods: The case-control study was conducted at the Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, from April 2017 to May 2018, and comprised diagnosed cases of chronic telogen effluvium in group A, and healthy controls matched for age and gender in group B. Hair pull test was done, and level of zinc in hair and serum samples was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Data was analysed using SPSS 21.

Results: Of the 100 subjects, 50(50%) were in group A; 28(56%) females ad 22(44%) males with mean age 27.46±4.98 years. There were 50(50%) subejcts in group B; 26(52%) males ad 24(48%) females with mean age 28.34±4.92 years (p>0.05). Significantly low levels of zinc were observed in serum as well as hair samples in group A compared to group B (p<0.05). A positive significant association was observed in the level of zinc in hair with their concentration in the serum of subjects in both the groups (r=0.310, p<0.05).

Conclusions: Low levels of zinc in hair and serum were found to be associated with chronic telogen effluvium.

Background: Chronic telogen effluvium (CTE) is characterized by hair loss lasting for more than 6 months and severely impairs quality of life (QoL). There is no specific treatment.

Aims: To assess the dermatological tolerance and clinical efficacy of a hair serum containing three plant-derived active ingredients (a Silybum marianum extract, Manganese PCA, and a Lespedeza capitata extract) in women with CTE.

Article Synopsis
  • Hair follicles undergo a continuous cycle of growth (anagen), regression (catagen), and rest (telogen), with the time spent in each phase affecting hair length and health.
  • Traditional beliefs suggest that 85%-90% of hair follicles are in the growth phase, but recent studies indicate that these values may not be accurate due to flaws in assessment methods.
  • A new examination of hair follicles during hair transplants revealed that catagen follicles (7.5%) are more prevalent than previously thought, challenging the established belief about the distribution of hair follicles in different stages.

Article Synopsis
  • Telogen effluvium (TE) is the most common type of hair loss, and Vitamin D may play a key role due to its effects on the immune system and inflammation.
  • A study involving 40 women with TE showed significantly lower Vitamin D levels compared to healthy controls, but after 3 months of oral Vitamin D treatment, their levels improved considerably.
  • The findings suggest that oral Vitamin D could be beneficial for TE, but more extensive research is needed to determine the appropriate dosages and treatment duration.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the nutritional status and levels of certain vitamins and minerals in women with chronic telogen effluvium (TE) compared to a control group, focusing on deficiencies that might contribute to the condition.
  • - Results showed that zinc (Zn) levels were significantly lower in TE patients, while selenium (Se) levels were higher; however, no notable differences were found for hemoglobin, ferritin, vitamin B12, thyroid function, vitamin D, copper (Cu), or biotin levels.
  • - The Cu/Zn ratio and Se levels emerged as significant indicators for diagnosing chronic telogen effluvium, suggesting a potential link between these nutrient levels and hair loss.

Article Synopsis
  • Telogen effluvium (TE), a common hair loss condition related to COVID-19, was studied in patients with severe cases who were hospitalized.
  • In a cohort of 77 patients, 68.8% experienced TE, with over half reporting early onset; 20.7% had complete hair regrowth within three months.
  • Factors like being female, having anemia, and severe pneumonia were linked to TE, while the majority experienced good recovery, though 7.5% had chronic TE, highlighting potential long-term health impacts.
