This study aims to determine the concentrations of tramadol in earwax (μg/g) and urine (μg/ml) samples taken from postoperative patients, to evaluate the sensitivity of earwax (cerumen) as an alternative analyte and compare it with the findings in urine samples. The results indicated that tramadol concentrations in earwax samples were averaged 45.08 μg/g (range: 13.5-107.7 μg/g), whereas tramadol concentrations in urine samples were averaged 4.97 μg/ml (range: 1.57-10.11 μg/ml). There were significant differences when comparing age groups, duration and sex between earwax and urine samples (p < 0.05). Despite the significant differences between earwax and urine samples, earwax can be used as a bioindicator of tramadol detection.

Background & objectives Alkaptonuria (AKU) is an autosomal recessive disease wherein biallelic pathogenic variants in the homogentisate 1,2- dioxygenase (HGD) gene encoding the enzyme homogentisate 1,2 dioxygenase cause high levels of homogentisic acid (HGA) to circulate within the body leading to its deposition in connective tissues and excretion in urine. A homozygous splice donor variant (c.87+1G>A) has been identified to be the founder variant causing alkaptonuria among Narikuravars, a group of gypsies settled in Tamil Nadu.

Objectives Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and progressive beta-cell dysfunction. As diabetes persists over time, more pronounced symptoms like polyuria, polydipsia, fatigue, and complications like neuropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular issues may develop. Therefore, this study assessed the clinical symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes regarding the duration of diabetes.

Objective: The increase of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii), especially carbapenem-resistant strains, is challenging for treating infections. This study investigated the antibiotic resistance pattern and frequency of carbapenem resistance genes (oxacillinase and metallo-beta-lactamase) in A.

Background: Both iodine deficiency and iodine excess can harm the thyroid glands during pregnancy. In areas without iodine fortification, the relationship between the water iodine concentration (WIC) and thyroid disease in pregnant women requires further investigation.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between water iodine levels and the prevalence of thyroid disease in pregnant women residing in areas with high water iodine levels without access to iodized salt.

Human serum albumin (HSA) levels in serum and urine is a crucial biomarker for diagnosing liver and kidney diseases. HSA is used to treat various disorders in clinical practice and as an excipient in the production of vaccine or protein drug, ensuring its purity essential for patient safety. However, selective and sensitive detection of HSA remains challenging due to its structural similarity with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the inherent complexity of biological matrices.
