AI Article Synopsis

  • The research focuses on seven bacterial isolates that are resistant to meropenem, a powerful antibiotic, found in the cloacae of painted and musk turtles in Lake Opinicon, Canada.
  • This study contributes to the understanding of how meropenem-resistant bacteria spread in natural environments.
  • The findings highlight potential environmental and health implications related to antibiotic resistance in wildlife.

Article Abstract

We report the draft genome sequences of seven meropenem-resistant bacterial isolates from the cloacae of painted and musk turtles at Lake Opinicon, Canada. This study improves our understanding of the spread of meropenem-resistant bacteria in the wild.

The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is a wide-ranging, long-living freshwater species with low reproductive success, mainly due to high predation pressure. We studied how habitat variables and predator communities in near-natural marshes affect the survival of turtle eggs and hatchlings. We followed the survival of artificial turtle nests placed in marshes along Lake Balaton (Hungary) in May and June as well as hatchlings (dummies) exposed in September.

Many cellular processes and organismal behaviours are time-dependent, and asynchrony of these phenomena can facilitate speciation through reinforcement mechanisms. The Mojave and Sonoran desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii and G. morafkai respectively) reside in adjoining deserts with distinct seasonal rainfall patterns and they exhibit asynchronous winter brumation and reproductive behaviours.

Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) are a species of conservation concern throughout their natural range. Headstarting is a common chelonian conservation technique in which neonates are reared in managed-care settings before release, but health assessments are rarely incorporated. From 2020 to 2021 we assessed headstarted turtle health pre-release and 1 mo, 1 yr, and 2 yr after release using physical examination, hematology, plasma biochemistry, protein electrophoresis, and pathogen detection.

Article Synopsis
  • * Turtles from the CDF showed signs of higher stress, including elevated glucose levels and altered blood metrics, compared to those from the PCM, which appeared healthier.
  • * Additionally, some turtles tested positive for Chlamydia, with a small number also showing co-infection with herpesvirus, highlighting the need to monitor the impacts of human-altered habitats on wildlife health.

Accurate scientific information is critical for undertaking appropriate conservation and management practices for imperiled species. One source of concern is that research findings might vary for non-biological reasons, including experimental design and analytical methods. To illustrate, we provide detailed modern analysis of reproductive data for leatherback turtles ().
