Background: Scedosporium apiospermum is a multidrug-resistant filamentous fungus that causes localized and disseminated diseases. Our group has previously described that metalbased complexes containing copper(II) or silver(I) ions complexed with 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6- dione (phendione) inhibited the viability of S. apiospermum conidial cells.

A 2-y-old, intact female, mixed-breed dog was presented to the veterinary hospital with abdominal distension, anemia, and lethargy following a chronic history of nonspecific gastrointestinal signs. CBC and serum biochemistry revealed moderate nonregenerative anemia with neutrophilia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperglobulinemia, hypoglycemia, decreased urea and creatinine, and hypercholesterolemia. Abdominal radiographs and ultrasound revealed a large heterogeneous mesenteric mass and ascites.

Fosmanogepix, a prodrug of Manogepix (MGX), is a groundbreaking antifungal agent with broad-spectrum activity against yeasts, including and , as well as molds. It exhibits effectiveness against drug-resistant strains, such as strains resistant to and strains resistant to azoles. Furthermore, fosmanogepix shows activity against pathogens that typically resist other classes of drugs, such as , , and , although its efficacy against Mucorales varies.

A Lateral-Flow Device for the Rapid Detection of Species.

Diagnostics (Basel)

April 2024

ISCA Diagnostics Ltd., B12A, Hatherly Laboratories, Prince of Wales Road, Exeter EX4 4PS, UK.

species are human pathogenic fungi, responsible for chronic, localised, and life-threatening disseminated infections in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. The diagnosis of infections currently relies on non-specific CT, lengthy and insensitive culture from invasive biopsy, and the time-consuming histopathology of tissue samples. At present, there are no rapid antigen tests that detect -specific biomarkers.

Article Synopsis
  • Scedosporium apiospermum is a rare fungal pathogen that typically affects immunocompromised individuals and is associated with poor outcomes.
  • A 37-year-old woman developed multiple lesions in her lungs, brain, and eyes after a near drowning incident, leading to confirmed S. apiospermum infection through advanced genomic sequencing.
  • Despite treatment with voriconazole, the patient experienced significant improvement but unfortunately lost vision in one eye due to a delayed diagnosis, highlighting the need for prompt recognition and intervention even in otherwise healthy individuals.
