Protocatechuic acid (PCA), a class of water-soluble phenolic acid abundant in the human diet, has been shown to be of great nutritional interest and to have medicinal value. However, the protective effects against lead (Pb)-induced body injury have not been elucidated. In this study, we explored the protective effect of PCA on Pb-induced oxidative damage and cognitive impairment in rats. The results showed that PCA could reduce the Pb content in rat bodies (blood, bone, brain, liver, and kidney) after Pb exposure. Moreover, PCA may inhibit Pb-induced oxidative damage by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and decreasing the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the brain, liver, and kidney. In addition, PCA may alleviate Pb-induced learning and memory impairment by upregulating neurotransmitter levels; maintaining the normal function of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs); and promoting Ca influx, thus activating signaling molecules, related protein kinases, and transcription factors in the cAMP-PKA-CREB pathway. In general, PCA could reduce oxidative stress and ameliorate the learning and memory deficits in Pb-treated rats, indicating that PCA may be an effective preventive agent and treatment or plumbism.

This study evaluates acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme activity levels, oxidative stress parameters, histopathological findings, and serum melatonin levels in rat brain tissue. 32 male Wistar Albino rats were randomly divided into four groups: Control, Light, Dark, Dim light ( = 8 each group). After a 30 day experiment, brain tissues were collected to measure AChE, glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione (GSH), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and conduct histopathological analyses.

Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare lysosomal disorder characterized by the accumulation of glycosphingolipids in macrophages resulting from glucocerebrosidase (GCase) deficiency. The accumulation of toxic substrates, which causes the hallmark symptoms of GD, is dependent on the extent of enzyme dysfunction. Accordingly, three distinct subtypes have been recognized, with type 1 GD (GD1) as the common and milder form, while types 2 (GD2) and 3 (GD3) are categorized as neuronopathic and severe.

Multiple forms of cell death contribute significantly to cardiovascular pathologies, negatively impacting cardiac remodeling and leading to heart failure. While myocardial cell death has been associated with PM induced cardiotoxicity, the temporal dynamics of various cell death forms, such as apoptosis, ferroptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis, in relation to inflammatory processes, remain underexplored. This study examines the time-dependent onset and progression of these cell death pathways in the myocardium and their correlation with inflammation in a Wistar rat model.

Targeting optimal glycemic control based on hemoglobin A1c (A1c) values reduces but does not abolish the onset of diabetic kidney disease and its progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD). This suggests that factors other than the average glucose contribute to the residual risk. Vitamin D deficiency and frequent episodes of acute hyperglycemia (AH) are associated with the onset of albuminuria and CKD progression in diabetes.
