Background: Tendon transfers in conjunction with reverse total shoulder arthroplasty can significantly improve functional outcomes in patients with glenohumeral arthritis and irreparable rotator cuff deficiency. There have been multiple promising new techniques described within the last 20 years that shoulder surgeons should become familiar with.

Methods: The authors reviewed the literature on tendon transfers in the setting of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

A novel balloon-expandable transcatheter aortic valve bioprosthesis: Myval and Myval Octacor.

Expert Rev Cardiovasc Ther

July 2024

U.O. Cardiologia Ospedaliera, IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio, Milan, Italy.

Introduction: Over the past two decades, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has expanded its application across all surgical risk levels, including low-risk patients, where, due to longer life expectancy, reducing common pitfalls of TAVR is essential. To address these needs, many technological advancements have been developed. Myval and the new generation Myval Octacor (Meril Life Sciences Pvt.

Arterial blood pressure (ABP) is often measured with oscillometry during anaesthesia. Changing the height of the measuring cuff with respect to the level of the heart is known to affect oscillometry accuracy in some species; however, this effect has not been investigated in cats. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of raising and lowering the measuring cuff from standard position (level of the heart) on ABP, measured with PetMAP, in anaesthetised cats.

The Ascyrus Medical Dissection Stent: A One-Fits-All Strategy for the Treatment of Acute Type A Aortic Dissection?

J Clin Med

April 2024

Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC), Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Augustenburger Platz 1, 13353 Berlin, Germany.

The treatment of DeBakey type I aortic dissection remains a major challenge in the field of aortic surgery. To upgrade the standard of care hemiarch replacement, a novel device called an "Ascyrus Medical Dissection Stent" (AMDS) is now available. This hybrid device composed of a proximal polytetrafluoroethylene cuff and a distal non-covered nitinol stent is inserted into the aortic arch and the descending thoracic aorta during hypothermic circulatory arrest in addition to hemiarch replacement.

Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty to Treat Proximal Humerus Fracture Sequelae: A Review.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

August 2024

From the Department of Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington (Schiffman), the Summit Health Orthopedics, Berkeley Heights, NJ (Cohn), and the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, The Rothman Institute-Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA (Austin and Namdari).

Article Synopsis
  • Many proximal humerus fractures managed without surgery achieve good results, but some can lead to painful malunions or nonunions.
  • When options like repairing malunions are unsuitable due to weak bone or joint issues, shoulder arthroplasty is a solid alternative.
  • Reverse shoulder arthroplasty is particularly effective for improving function in cases with significant bone deformities or rotator cuff tears, with a classification system available to help predict outcomes and complications.
