An integrative taxonomic approach reveals two putatively novel species of phlebotomine sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Thailand.

Parasit Vectors

January 2025

Center of Excellence in Veterinary Parasitology, Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, 10330, Thailand.

Background: The subfamily Phlebotominae comprises 1028 species of sand fly, of which only 90 are recognized as vectors of pathogenic agents such as Trypanosoma, Leishmania, and Bartonella. In Thailand, leishmaniasis-a sand fly-borne disease-is currently endemic, with 36 documented sand fly species. However, many cryptic species likely remain unidentified.

Spatiotemporal expansion of dengue in Brazilian Amazon between 2001 and 2021.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Laboratory of Veterinary Epidemiology, Graduate Program in Veterinary Medicine, Universidade Federal de Pelotas, University Campus, Building 42, Post Office Box 354, Capão do Leão, RS, CEP 96010-900, Brazil.

Dengue remains a significant public health concern in Brazil, with all federative units registering occurrences of the disease within their territories despite constant measures to control the Aedes aegypti vector. This study aimed to evaluate the profile of notified dengue cases in the Brazilian Legal Amazon from 2001 to 2021, analyzing National System of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) data on the disease to assess the risks for its occurrence. Subsequently, statistical analyses were conducted to identify incidence and lethality rates.

Aerosol dynamics in dental clinics: effects of ventilation mode on the mitigation of airborne diseases transmission.

Environ Pollut

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases & National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610041, Sichuan province, China. Electronic address:

Dental operations inherently involve a high risk of airborne cross-infection among medical staff and patients due to the exposure of respiratory secretions, which contain pathogenic microorganisms and typically spread in the form of aerosols. In order to contribute to the understanding of aerosol dynamics during dental operation and efficiently mitigate their dispersion and deposition through appropriate ventilation, 3D numerical simulations and full-scale experimental measurements were performed in this study. The indoor airflow distribution and dynamic aerosol behaviors observed under three optimized ventilation schemes (Scenario I-III) were compared with those observed under the current ventilation system.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a complex, chronic mental disorder characterized by positive symptoms (such as delusions and hallucinations), negative symptoms (including anhedonia, alogia, avolition, and social withdrawal), and cognitive deficits (affecting attention, processing speed, verbal and visuospatial learning, problem-solving, working memory, and mental flexibility). Extensive animal and clinical studies have emphasized the NMDAR hypofunction hypothesis of SZ. Glycine plays a crucial role as an agonist of NMDAR, enhancing the receptor's affinity for glutamate and supporting normal synaptic function and plasticity, that is, signal transmission between neurons.
