Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder characterized by movement impairments. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has shown promise in treating various neurological conditions, including PD. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the existing evidence on the efficacy of nVNS in managing PD symptoms.

This review investigates the therapeutic potential of vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) in managing long COVID, a condition marked by persistent symptoms following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. Long COVID manifests as ongoing fatigue, cognitive impairment, and autonomic dysfunction, hypothesized to arise from sustained inflammatory and neurological dysregulation. The vagus nerve, central to modulating systemic inflammation and autonomic homeostasis, represents a promising therapeutic target for symptom alleviation through VNS.

As cholinergic innervation is a major contributor to increased vagal tone and mucus secretion, inhaled long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMA) are a pillar for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. By blocking the muscarinic receptors expressed in the lung, LAMA improve lung function and reduce exacerbations in asthma patients who remained poorly controlled despite treatment with inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2 agonists. Asthma guidelines recommend LAMA as a third controller to be added on before the initiation of biologicals.
