The picture-superiority effect is the finding that memory for pictures exceeds memory for words on many tasks. According to dual-coding theory, the pictures' mnemonic advantage stems from their greater likelihood to be labelled relative to words being imaged. In contrast, distinctiveness accounts hold that the greater variability of pictures compared to words leads to their mnemonic advantage. Ensor, Surprenant, et al. tested these accounts in old/new and forced-choice recognition by increasing the physical distinctiveness of words and decreasing the physical distinctiveness of pictures. Half of the words were presented in standard black font, and half were presented in varying font styles, font sizes, font colours, and capitalisation patterns. Half of the pictures were presented in black and white and half in colour. Consistent with the physical-distinctiveness account but contrary to the dual-coding account, the picture-superiority effect was eliminated when comparing the black-and-white pictures to distinctive words. In the present study, we extend Ensor, Surprenant, et al.'s results to associative recognition and free recall. Results were consistent with physical distinctiveness. We argue that dual-coding theory is no longer a viable explanation of the picture-superiority effect.

Sexual assault is a terrible crime that demands a comprehensive and skilled investigation to gather the perpetrator's biological material. To collect all possible physical and biological evidence, forensic investigation is crucial and should be conducted as soon as possible. The primary focus of such investigations is the detection of male-specific materials.

The reaction between molybdenum(ii) acetate and 5-aminoisophthalic acid (HIso-NH) afforded [MoO(μ-O)(Iso-NH)], a novel molybdenum(v) metal-organic polyhedron (MOP) with a triangular antiprismatic shape stabilized by intramolecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The synthesis conditions, particularly the choice of solvent and reaction time, led to the precipitation of the Mo(v)-MOP in five distinct crystalline forms. These forms vary in their packing arrangements, co-crystallized solvent molecules, and counter-cations, with three phases containing dimethylammonium (dma) and the other two containing diethylammonium (dea).

Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a rare multisystem genetic disorder of childhood, caused by a defect in vesicular trafficking, which is an essential process for intracellular transport. This defect results in the formation of giant cytoplasmic granules in various cell types, including white blood cells, melanosomes, and Schwann cells. The presence of giant lysosomal granules in neutrophils and their precursors is a distinct and diagnostic feature of CHS, differentiating it from other childhood immunodeficiency disorders, such as Griscelli syndrome and Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome, which share common characteristics like albinism and increased susceptibility to fatal hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

Fabricating ZnO@C composites based on shell-derived cellulose for high performance lithium-ion battery anodes.

Heliyon

December 2024

Department of Chemical, Biological & Battery Engineering, Gachon University, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, 13120, Republic of Korea.

In this study, shell-derived cellulose was successfully produced, and the hydrothermal method was employed to generate ZnO@C (ZOC) composites, which were then subjected to calcination in N gas at a temperature of 600 °C for varying durations. X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses demonstrated that the annealing duration had a substantial impact on the quantities of C and ZnO in the ZOC composites. The scanning electron microscope images indicated the presence of ZnO nanoparticles on the surface of the C phase and revealed a similar morphology among the ZOC composites.

Introduction: α-Calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-CSH) is a widely used artificial bone graft material, but it suffers from rapid deterioration and limited osteoinductivity. This study aims to develop composite cements by combining treated dentin matrix (TDM) with α-CSH to enhance osteogenic properties for the healing of bone deformities.

Methods: The composite cements were prepared by mixing treated dentin matrix (TDM) with α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-CSH) and characterized for their mechanical, morphological, and chemical properties using a universal mechanical testing machine, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.
