The literature on the blood cells of Zovawk pigs is scanty; thus, this study was designed to elaborate the light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of blood cells of Zovawk pigs by LM and SEM. Twelve different blood samples were aseptically obtained from adult healthy Zovawk pigs, irrespective of sex. To determine the cytomorphological and cytochemical structures of the many produced constituents of blood, blood smears were stained with various stains.

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV), also identified as the glycoprotein CD26, is a transmembrane 110- to 120-kDa serine aminopeptidase involved in immune responses by influencing T-cell costimulation and by cleaving cytokines. Additionally, CD26 is a nonintegrin receptor that contains a binding site for extracellular matrix and other molecules. In order to further define the expression and functional activity of this membrane exopeptidase in human T cells, we developed a nondisruptive, four-color cytofluorogenic assay that utilizes three separate antibodies to cell-surface molecules (e.

Glycosaminoglycans (heparins, dermatan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate) with different structures and physicochemical properties were evaluated for their capacity to influence proliferation and differentiation of U-937 cell line. The contrasting and specific effects of glycosaminoglycans (depending on their structures and properties) on a leukemia cell line could help explain the regulation of proliferative and/or differentiative processes of hematopoietic cells in order to clarify the control of development and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells by bone marrow extracellular matrix. Heparin from beef intestinal mucosa, heparan sulfate from beef spleen, dermatan sulfate from beef intestinal mucosa, and chondroitin sulfate from bovine trachea were extracted and purified, and their purity, structures, and physicochemical properties were evaluated.

In 21 patients with active, endoscopically confirmed untreated duodenal ulcer and in a control group of 20 persons, the studies were carried out of peripheral blood neutrophils which included: 1) test with the assessment of neutrophil phagocytic activity against live bacterial cells of the Staphylococcus aureus Oxford 209P standard strain and against latex particles, 2) test of nitroblue tetrazolium reduction (NBT test) by neutrophils, 3) evaluation of alkaline phosphatase activity in the neutrophils by a cytoenzymatic technique. In the group of patients as compared with the control group a decrease was observed of neutrophil phagocytic activity against live bacterial cells, and absence of similar differences was noted when latex particles were the stimulating factor. In the studied group an increase of the value of the index of spontaneous NBT reduction by neutrophils was observed as well as a decrease of the value of the index of latex-stimulated reduction of this dye.

In 20 patients with active, endoscopically confirmed duodenal ulcer, serum lysozyme activity, metabolic and phagocytic activity of neutrophils using the NBT spontaneous and stimulated test and stimulated test, and cytoenzymatic reaction for alkaline phosphatase were evaluated before treatment and after two weeks of treatment with ranitidine 150 mg every 12 hours. In some of the studies carried out the differences were obtained between the mean results which turned out to be statistically significant. In the group of patients with duodenal ulcer after two weeks of treatment with ranitidine, a statistically significant increase was found of diluted serum lysozyme activity as compared to the activity of this enzyme before the treatment.
