The present work was carried out during the emergence of Delta Variant of Concern (VoC) and aimed to study the change in SARS CoV-2 viral load in Covishield vaccinated asymptomatic/mildly symptomatic health-care workers (HCWs) to find out the optimum isolation period. The SARS CoV-2 viral load was carried out in sequential samples of 55 eligible HCWs which included unvaccinated (UnV; n = 11), single-dose vaccinated (SDV, n = 20) and double-dose vaccinated [DDV, n = 24; short-interval (<6 weeks)] subjects. The mean load of envelope (E) gene on day 5 in SDV [0.42 × 10 copies/reaction] was significantly lower as compared to DDV [6.3 × 10 copies/reaction, P = 0.005] and UnV [6.6 × 10 copies/reaction, P = 0.001] groups. The rate of decline of SARS CoV-2 viral load in the initial 5 days of PCR positivity was significantly higher in SDV as compared to that in DDV (Mean log decline 0.39 vs. 0.19; P < 0.001). This was possibly due to interference of adenoviral immunity of first dose of adenovirus-vectored vaccine in double-dose vaccinated HCWs who had received vaccines within a shorter interval (<6 weeks).

To explore the mechanism of water inrush from the mine roof strata, a series of seepage-acoustic emission (SAE) experiments on red sandstone disc samples were carried out. The effects of the height to diameter ratio (H/D) and pore pressure on the mechanical, hydraulic and crack propagation properties of red sandstones were investigated. Test results show that, the peak load of rock samples declines with the decreasing H/D and increasing pore pressure.

Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) represent a feature of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), a prominent vascular contributor to age-related cognitive decline, dementia, and stroke. They are visible as spherical hypointense signals on T2*- or susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences. An increasing number of automated CMB detection methods being proposed are based on supervised deep learning (DL).

The development of management strategies for the promotion of sustainable fisheries relies on a deep knowledge of ecological and evolutionary processes driving the diversification and genetic variation of marine organisms. Sustainability strategies are especially relevant for marine species such as the European sardine (Sardina pilchardus), a small pelagic fish with high ecological and socioeconomic importance, especially in Southern Europe, whose stock has declined since 2006, possibly due to environmental factors. Here, we generated sequences for 139 mitochondrial genomes from individuals from 19 different geographical locations across most of the species distribution range, which was used to assess genetic diversity, diversification history and genomic signatures of selection.

Disruptions in cognitive function have been reported in individuals undergoing haemodialysis and those with chronic kidney disease. This pilot study protocol primarily assesses the feasibility and acceptability of using mobile cognitive gaming apps for patient-led cognitive training during haemodialysis sessions. The protocol consists of three phases: (1) reviewing and evaluating available cognitive gaming apps, (2) conducting focus groups/interviews with people with kidney disease to determine app preferences, and (3) undertaking a quasi-experimental randomised controlled trial to compare cognitive outcomes between a patient-led app intervention group and a standard care control group over four months.

Burden of Food-Borne Trematodiases in China: Trends from 1990 to 2021 and Projections to 2035.

Trop Med Infect Dis

December 2024

National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases Prevention and Control, Wuxi 214064, China.

To assess the burden of food-borne trematodiases in China from 1990 to 2021 and project the burden through 2035, data were captured from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021 datasets. The estimated prevalent food-borne trematodiase cases were 33.32 million (95% uncertainty interval (): 29.
