Sensitive images represent a new challenge in enterprise imaging. These images, often containing nudity or gruesome content, have the potential to cause emotional harm to patients and people who view the images. Unfortunately, the interoperability standards used in imaging informatics have not yet addressed this issue. Because of this, the software solutions used in healthcare information technology are not able to offer patients and other viewers of image protections. In this Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS)/Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) Enterprise Imaging Community Whitepaper, we define sensitive images, identify unique challenges related to their management, and provide recommendations for future solutions to protect our patients.

Optimization of Existing RNA Visualization Methods Reveals Novel Dendritic mRNA Dynamics.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

December 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, Hunter College, City University of New York, New York, NY 10065, USA.

Background: Spatial-temporal control of mRNA translation in dendrites is important for synaptic plasticity. In response to pre-synaptic stimuli, local mRNA translation can be rapidly triggered near stimulated synapses to supply the necessary proteins for synapse maturation or elimination, and 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) are responsible for proper localization of mRNAs in dendrites. Although is a robust technique for analyzing RNA localization in fixed neurons, live-cell imaging of RNA dynamics remains challenging.

Lighting Up and Identifying Metal-Binding Proteins in Cells.

JACS Au

December 2024

Department of Chemistry and HKU-CAS Joint Laboratory of Metallomics for Health and Environment, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong, SAR, P.R. China.

Metal ions, either essential or therapeutic, play critical roles in life processes or in the treatment of diseases. Proteins and enzymes are involved in metal homeostasis and the action of metallodrugs. Imaging and identifying these metal-binding proteins will facilitate the elucidation of metal-mediated life processes.

Introduction: The Steinberg classification system is commonly used by orthopedic surgeons to stage the severity of patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), and it includes mild, moderate, and severe grading of each stage based on the area of the femoral head affected. However, clinicians mostly grade approximately by visual assessment or not at all. To accurately distinguish the mild, moderate, or severe grade of early stage ONFH, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the hip joint of patients to accurately grade and aid diagnosis of ONFH.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) are promising nanomedicine vehicles due to their biocompatibility and ability to carry large cargoes. It is critical in nanomedicine development to be able to map their uptake in cells, including distinguishing surface associated MSNPs from those that are embedded or internalized into cells. Conventional nanoscale imaging techniques, such as electron and fluorescence microscopies, however, generally require the use of stains and labels to image both the biological material and the nanomedicines, which can interfere with the biological processes at play.

The large-scale preparation of fluorescent nanomaterials with laboratory-relevant chemical and optical properties will greatly forward their consumer market applications; however, it still remains challenging. In this work, a universal strategy was developed for the rapid and large-scale synthesis of fluorescent sulfur quantum dots that recently has drawn great attention because of their unique optical characteristics. From the fact that empty 3d orbitals of sulfide species are able to bind with lone-pair π electrons of the heteroatomic groups, many amino-group containing compounds, such as amino acid and polyethylenimine molecules, were exploited to synthesize sulfur quantum dots.
