Introduction: Ischemic gut injury is common in the intensive care unit, impairs gut barrier function, and contributes to multiorgan dysfunction. One novel intervention to mitigate ischemic gut injury is the direct luminal delivery of oxygen microbubbles (OMB). Formulations of OMB can be modified to control the rate of oxygen delivery. This project examined whether luminal delivery of pectin-modified OMB (OMBp5) can reduce ischemic gut injury in a rodent model.
Methods: The OMBp5 formulation was adapted to improve delivery of oxygen along the length of small intestine. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 24) were randomly allocated to three groups: sham-surgery (SS), intestinal ischemia (II), and intestinal ischemia plus luminal delivery of OMBp5 (II + O). Ischemia-reperfusion injury was induced by superior mesenteric artery occlusion for 45 min followed by reperfusion for 30 min. Outcome data included macroscopic score of mucosal injury, the histological score of gut injury, and plasma biomarkers of intestinal injury.
Results: Macroscopic, microscopic data, and intestinal injury biomarker results demonstrated minimal intestinal damage in the SS group and constant damage in the II group. II + O group had a significantly improved macroscopic score throughout the gut mucosa (P = 0.04) than the II. The mean histological score of gut injury for the II + O group was significantly improved on the II group (P ≤ 0.01) in the proximal intestine only, within 30 cm of delivery. No differences were observed in plasma biomarkers of intestinal injury following OMBp5 treatment.
Conclusions: This proof-of-concept study has demonstrated that luminal OMBp5 decreases ischemic injury to the proximal small intestine. There is a need to improve oxygen delivery over the full length of the intestine. These findings support further studies with clinically relevant end points, such as systemic inflammation and vital organ dysfunction.

After being exposed, microplastics mostly bioaccumulated in guts and gills of fish, then, through circulation, spread and bioaccumulated in other tissues. Circulatory system of fish is impacted by the microplastic bioaccumulation in their tissues, influencing a number of hematological indices that are connected with immunity, osmotic pressure, blood clotting, molecular transport and fat metabolism. Variables like size, dose, duration, food consumption and species, all affect the bioaccumulation and toxicity of the microplastic, rather than the exposure routes.

Heat-induced stress has a significant impact on the health of broilers. It induces panting behavior and elevates oxygen consumption, leading to considerable strain on the broiler lungs. However, the precise effects of heat stress on lung injury, along with changes in the lung and gut microbiota, are not yet fully understood.

As a common side effect of radiotherapy, radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) greatly affects the prognosis of patients and the efficacy of radiotherapy. Current therapeutic strategies for RIII are still very limited. Thus, the identification of effective radioprotective agents is of great importance.

Natural plant-derived polysaccharides exhibit substantial potential for treating ulcerative colitis (UC) owing to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and favorable safety profiles. However, their practical application faces several challenges, including structural instability in gastric acid, imprecise targeting of inflamed regions, and limited intestinal retention times. To address these limitations, pH-responsive, colon-targeting microspheres (pWGPAC MSs) are developed for delivering phosphorylated wild ginseng polysaccharides (pWGP) to alleviate UC.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find the potential mechanism of two Lactobacillus ( L11 and LR) on ameliorating obesity, including lipid metabolism and gut microbiota. The two isolates have been studied to have good characterization in vitro, but in vivo studies in modulating lipid metabolism and gut microbiota were not studied.
Methods: In this study, mice with HFD supplemented with L11 or LR exhibited slower obesity progression, including reduced weight gain, abdominal fat accumulation, liver damage, inflammation, and adipose lesions.
