Various alkenes are formylated with dichloromethyl methyl ether (MOMCl) by the combined use of SnCl/2,6-dibromopyridine () or AgOTf/pyridine () via Friedel-Crafts-type reaction. The former reagent combination is mainly applied to α,α-diarylalkenes, while the latter one is applied not only to arylalkenes but also to some alkylalkenes. Vinyl aldehydes are exclusively obtained from alkenes that can possibly afford both allyl and vinyl aldehydes.

A series of 26 novel 1-(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl)-4-nitro-1-pyrazoles bearing a dichloromethyl and an amino or thio moiety at C3 and C5 has been prepared in yields up to 72% from the reaction of 1,1-bisazolyl-, 1-azolyl-1-amino-, and 1-thioperchloro-2-nitrobuta-1,3-dienes with 7-chloro-4-hydrazinylquinoline. A new way for the formation of a pyrazole cycle from 3-methyl-2-(2,3,3-trichloro-1-nitroallylidene)oxazolidine () is also described. In addition, the antimalarial activity of the synthesized compounds has been evaluated in vitro against the protozoan malaria parasite .

Formylations of fluorine-containing aromatic compounds with dichloromethyl alkyl ethers have been investigated. Dichloromethyl propyl ether and dichloromethyl butyl ether have been applied for the formylation of fluorine-containing anisoles to give the corresponding aldehydes in good yields. Application of these ethers is preferable to that of methyl ether, which is prepared from volatile methyl formate.

As a result of our efforts to identify bioactive agents from marine algae, we have isolated and identified one new halogenated monoterpene 1 [(-)-(5E,7Z)-348-trichloro-7-dichloromethyl-3-methyl-157-octatriene] in addition to three known compounds (2, 3 and 4) from the red alga Plocamium cartilagineum collected by hand from the eastern coast of South Africa. Compound 1 was found to be active as a cytotoxic agent in human lung cancer (NCI-H460) and mouse neuro-2a cell lines (IC 4 μg/mL).
