Mpox is a zoonotic viral disease caused by the (MPXV). Human cases have been mainly restricted to the African continent until the worldwide multi-country outbreak unfolded in 2022. We reconstructed epidemiological links of 53 MPXV infections using genomic epidemiology in Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil, during 2022 and 2023.

Background: Ethiopia faces several severe challenges in terms of malaria elimination, including drug resistance and diagnostic evasion in the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, insecticide resistance in the primary Anopheles malaria vector, and, most recently, the invasion of the Asian malaria vector Anopheles stephensi. Novel malaria control methods are therefore needed, and in this paper, we describe the evaluation of a larval source management (LSM) strategy implemented in response to An. stephensi.

  • In 2024, there was a significant increase in mpox cases due to clade I of the monkeypox virus in Central Africa.
  • The first case of MPXV clade Ib outside Africa was reported in Sweden in mid-August, linked to travel, but it resulted in a mild illness.
  • To avoid the emergence of new MPXV clades, enhanced public health measures and monitoring, including whole genome sequencing, are essential.
