We provide transect profiles of Cs and Sr along 146.5°E, 136°E and 21°N in the subtropical western North Pacific (WNP) during May 2018. Exploiting the constant global fallout Cs/Sr ratio, we separated Fukushima-derived Cs (Cs) from background Cs. At most stations, Cs exhibited only one subsurface peak at 300 m depth, corresponding to subtropical mode water (STMW); however, at 25-28°N along 146.5°E and 25-26°N along 136°E, Cs exhibited two subsurface peaks, with another peak occurring at 500 m depth, corresponding to lighter central mode water (L-CMW). Temporal changes in Cs vertical profiles showed that Cs entrained by STMW has recirculated within the western subtropical gyre, while Cs entrained by L-CMW has turned southwestward and arrived the western basin in 2018. In the Luzon Strait, the entrance to the South China Sea (SCS), subsurface Cs increased since 2013 and peaked in approximately 2018. The estimated amount of Cs entering the SCS during 2013-2019 was 0.33 ± 0.10 PBq, equivalent to 1.7-2.2% of total leakage of Cs into the ocean. These results enhance our understanding of the protracted spread and fate of Cs in the subtropical WNP.

Pacific Proving Grounds-Derived U and U: Potential Tracers for Western North Pacific Ocean Dynamics.

U and U are proven to be useful tracers to investigate upper-ocean hydrodynamics due to their source-specific isotopic ratios and conservative behaviors in the open ocean. However, their application in the Pacific Ocean has been limited by scarce observations and unclear source-term information. Here, we present our observations of U and U in the western North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPStG), showing the presence of a source of anthropogenic U featured by a low U/U ratio (∼1 × 10), which is an order of magnitude lower than the global fallout signature (∼2 × 10).

Temporal variability and associated driving factors of sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) in coastal waters have been extensively studied worldwide; however, the importance and spatial heterogeneity of these driving factors remain insufficiently documented. This study addressed this gap by investigating the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) from August 2002 to June 2016, using long-term remote sensing-derived data of Chl-a and potential driving factors, including total suspended solids (TSS), precipitation, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and sea surface temperature (SST); and in situ measurements of potential driving factors, including river discharge, wind speed, alongshore wind (u), cross-shore wind (v), and tidal range. A pixel-by-pixel correlation analysis was conducted to preliminarily examine the relationships between these potential driving factors and Chl-a.
