The presence of PFAS in water matrices has become a global environmental issue in the last half-century. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and electrooxidation (EO) showed potential for PFAS degradation but have yet to find practical application due to relatively high energy consumption. In this study, a hybrid DBD-EO system for efficient degradation of PFAS was developed by involving more reactive oxygen, sulfate radicals (SO) and nitrogen species (RONS).

In recent decades, global change and local anthropogenic pressures have severely affected natural ecosystems and their biodiversity. Although disentangling the effects of these factors is difficult, they are reflected in changes in the functional composition of plant communities. We present a comprehensive, large-scale analysis of long-term changes in plant communities of various non-forest habitat types in the Czech Republic based on 1154 vegetation-plot time series from 53 resurvey studies comprising 3909 vegetation-plot records.

Low-lying and small tropical coral reef islands around the world are extremely vulnerable to the effects of global environmental change caused by the combination of anthropogenic climate change and escalating extreme hydrodynamic events. Erosion and inundation are anticipated to physically destabilize the tropical coral reef islands, rendering them uninhabitable within the next century. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the repercussions of these hazardous events on the delicate reef island ecosystem in order to conserve and ensure sustainable management.

Isoleucic acid (ILA) was identified in human patients with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) half a century ago. MSUD patients, who are defective in the catabolism of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), that is, isoleucine, leucine, and valine, have urine with a unique maple syrup odour related to the accumulation of BCAA breakdown products, largely 2-keto acid derivatives and their reduced 2-hydroxy acids including ILA. A decade ago, ILA was identified in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Environmental endocrine disruptors, as exogenous chemicals that interfere with hormonal behavior, are known to cause testicular Leydig cell death and senescence. The incidence of diseases of the male reproductive system has been increasing over the past half-century. Genetic defects alone cannot explain the rapid increase in incidence, and there is growing evidence that environmental factors or lifestyle changes are responsible for the high incidence in recent years.
