Light aromatics (benzene, toluene, and xylene, collectively known as BTX) are essential commodity chemicals in the petrochemical industry. The present study examines the aromatization of bioethanol with Cr- and Ga-modified ZSM-5. Both Cr and Ga were incorporated by the ion-exchange method. Cr-modified ZSM-5 outperforms the Ga-modified ZSM-5 and H-ZSM-5 catalysts. Cr-H-ZSM-5 almost doubled the carbon yield of aromatics compared to H-ZSM-5 at an optimum reaction temperature of 450 °C. Cr-H-ZSM-5 produced aromatics with a yield of ~40 %. The effect of dilution in feed on BTX production is also studied. Cr-H-ZSM-5 was found to be more active than H-ZSM-5. Complete ethanol conversion was obtained with both pure and dilute bioethanol. The Bronsted-Lewis acid (BLA) pair formed after metal incorporation is responsible for dehydrogenation followed by aromatization, leading to increased aromatic production.

A systematic study of the comparative performances of 4% Ga-, 4% Zr-, and 1% Cr-impregnated H-ZSM-5 catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane in the presence and absence of CO is presented. It was found that methane, ethene, propene, butene, pentene, and BTX are the major products from all of these catalysts at various reaction temperatures (400-550 °C), WHSV, 4 kg s mol and feed gas, CH/N = 2.5/97.

The production of valuable aromatics and the rapid catalyst deactivation due to coking are intimately related in the zeolite-catalyzed aromatization reactions. Here, we demonstrate that these two processes can be decoupled by promoting the Ga/HZSM-5 aromatization catalyst with Ca. The resulting bimetallic catalysts combine high selectivity to light aromatics with extended catalyst lifetime in the methanol-to-aromatics process.

Light olefins are key components of modern chemical industry and are feedstocks for the production of many commodity chemicals widely used in our daily life. It would be of great economic significance to convert light alkanes, produced during the refining of crude oil or extracted during the processing of natural gas selectively to value-added products, such as light alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, etc., through catalytic dehydrogenation.

Ga-modified zeolites represent the most effective catalyst for catalytic transformation of light alkanes to aromatics. GaO ions and GaO clusters on Ga/ZSM-5 zeolites are probed by solid-state NMR. These two types of Ga species show strong Lewis acidity and are quantitatively correlated with the catalytic activity of Ga/ZSM-5 for methane C-H bond activation.
